SUMMARY:
- India is one of the largest
English-speaking countries in the world, second only to the US. But in a
country with around 880 spoken languages, only 22 of which are even officially
recognized, it’s no wonder Indian English may
sometimes tickle your ear in a
strange way.
- In India, when two loving hearts decide
to marry each other, the groom must put a wedding ring on his bride’s… toe?
Yep, that’s the custom! These wedding rings are called “bichiya,” and every
bride wears them on both her second toes as a sign of her newly married state.
- Most people in India believe that a
spoken word has immense power within it. And if you break a promise, you’ll
enrage spirits and deities.
- India’s Bollywood is the largest film
industry in the world. It produces about 1,200 films every year – that’s twice
the amount that Hollywood puts out.
- If you ever go to the village of
Anandapally after harvest season, then you might be able to watch some bull
surfing! Can you imagine riding on a board with the power of two oxen in your
hands?!
- The original word “champu” means
“massage” and was initially used to describe the process of hair strengthening
with herbs common in India.
- India gets a lot of criticism for its
pollution problem, which there’s no denying that it’s a serious one. But that
doesn’t say anything about Indian people’s attitude towards wildlife. There are
104 national parks in India, with over 15,000 square miles of overall coverage.
- India is not only home to rare wildlife
species, but some uncommon ideologies too. One of them is Zoroastrianism.
Zoroastrians believe fire and earth to be sacred fundamental elements, so it’s
really undesirable for them to bury or cremate their departed.
- Indian has the fourth largest railway
system in the world, with almost 42,000 miles of track overall. But if you want
to keep a pleasant impression of this country in your heart, then you might
wanna avoid trains at all costs.
- “The Most Beautiful Indian Elephant”
contest happens each year on the full moon between February and March, and this
pageant is a key part of Jaipur’s famous Elephant Festival. Nowhere else in the
whole world are these gorgeous giants celebrated like they are here.
[Music]
so here's a fun riddle for you
we're in the world our wedding rings
worn on the toes and people serve bulls
instead of waves now it's not New Jersey
folks it's India and it's a place full
of odd customs and curiosities you
probably didn't know about and guess
what today's your lucky day I'm going to
tell you about it
for example there's in descending order
number twelve the quirks of Indian
English now India is one of the largest
english-speaking countries in the world
second only to the US but in a country
with around 880 spoken languages only 22
of which are even officially recognized
it's no wonder Indian English may
sometimes tickle your ear in a strange
way for instance if a person starts
talking to you with a weird yaar sound
don't worry that's just the Indian way
to say hey dude Indians would probably
ask your name with the phrase what's
your good name and no that doesn't mean
you have some kind of a bad name that
you somehow earned it's just a way of
being polite and when an Indian person
finally starts addressing you by your
first name they may add G to the end to
show how much they respect you ah my
dear bright side er g11 beautifully
adorned toes in India when two loving
hearts decide to marry each other the
groom must put a wedding ring on his
bride's toe yep that's the custom these
wedding rings are called bicha and every
bride wears them on both her second toes
as a sign of her newly married State
there are other kinds of Touring's in
India too some men wear them on their
big toes in a belief that it'll boost
their strength and vigor Indians are
famous for their love of gold but toe
rings are mostly made of silver because
it's inappropriate to wear gold below
the waist number 10
unbreakable promises most people in
India believe that a spoken-word has
immense power within it and if you break
a promise you'll enrage spirits and
deities the most powerful promise is the
promise of a mother so if an Indian
person swears by this then you better
believe them if you don't want to come
off as really rude number 9 the
birthplace of plastic surgery among
India's most sacred texts there's one
that baffles surgeons and medical
experts to this day it's called the
Sushruta Samhita and it's a fundamental
part of the indian practice of Ayurveda
it was written by the ancient Indian
surgeon Sushruta somewhere between 1000
BCE and 500 BCE the text describes tons
of unbelievably complex surgical
procedures but the most fascinating
thing is that it proves that India is
probably the birthplace of all plastic
surgery even for his time
Sushruta was totally capable of doing
nose jobs or rhinoplasty 'he's if you
want to be technical and earlobe
reconstructions not exactly what would
make movie stars seem foreveryoung but
still impressive speaking of movies
number eight twice the Hollywood India's
Bollywood is the largest film industry
in the world
no not Hollywood Bollywood produces
about 1,200 films every year that's
twice the amount that Hollywood puts out
and if you want to start an acting
career in India you better learn how to
sing and dance since most of the movies
produce there are musicals this passion
for musical stems from a deep
appreciation for Indian traditional
dance and folklore
also it's no secret that Bollywood was
inspired by Hollywood works from the
1920s to 1950s many of which were
musicals Bollywood got its be from
Bombay the city where most Indian films
are produced which of course changed its
name to Mumbai in 1995 yeah they should
keep a be Mollywood just
No isn't the same number seven holy rats
I know it sounds absurd so let me
explain according to an ancient Indian
legend the mighty and worshipped warrior
sage karni mata tragically lost her
stepson Laxman when he accidentally fell
in a pond and drowned
karni mata was in such grief that she
begged the gods to save him well they
did but on one condition
all of her male children would be
reincarnated as rats ah those wacky gods
what a unique sense of humor huh
so that's why the temple devoted to
karni mata in dish snow is known as rat
temple here you are going through a huge
hall
completely covered in rats but people
here are happy to come and share their
food with these sacred long-tailed
rodents a might be a relative it's a
particular honor to come across and feed
the rare white rats in the temple
they're believed to be the true
reincarnation of karni mata and her
son's number six bull surfing whoa
gnarly dude if you ever go to the
village of Ananda pala after harvest
season then you might be able to watch
some bull surfing how do you surf a ball
very carefully I'd guess you see first
off they make a track on a flooded field
that becomes pretty much a big muddy
swamp then teams yeah it's a competitive
sport compete to stay on a board being
pulled through the water by two bulls
these jockeys trained for this event and
the Bulls are groomed and cleaned with
their horns being polished nice and
shiny doesn't last very long can you see
yourself hanging ten on a board driven
by two really big mammals in your hands
and that's no bull wait yes it is
turf sup dude
number five who to thank for your clean
hair did you know the word shampoo has
Indian roots well that comes as no
surprise since shampooing itself
originates in India the original word
chompoo means massage and was initially
used to describe the process of hair
strengthening with herbs common in India
but India has good reason to pay so much
attention to their locks the country
sells over 20 billion dollars worth of
hair in a single month such amounts are
second only to China but even this hair
selling giant mixes its product with
indian hair for better quality
[Music]
number four serious wildlife
conservation india gets a lot of
criticism for its pollution problem
which there's no denying that it's a
serious one but that doesn't say
anything about indian people's attitude
towards wildlife there are 104 national
parks in india with over 15,000 square
miles of overall coverage some of the
rarest animals on earth inhabit these
parks like the bizarre-looking
purplefrog
the smallest pig in the world the pygmy
hog and the largest living bat the
indian flying fox these endangered
species are in severe need of protection
and India has proven itself very capable
of wildlife conservation just take the
country's national symbol as an example
in 2010 there were only between 1700 and
1900 Bengal tigers left in the world but
those numbers are now up to around 2,200
the Bengal tiger is still considered
endangered even though it's the biggest
tiger species in terms of numbers so you
can imagine how grave the situation is
for its cousins elsewhere number three
towers of silence India is not only home
to rare wildlife species but some
uncommon ideologies - one of them is
Zoroastrianism zoroastrians believed
fire and earth to be sacred fundamental
el
so it's very bad for them to bury or
cremate their departed the solution they
came up with was to build towers of
silence for the deceased also known as
docma these towers have no roof so that
nature can step in and do the work as an
undertaker
the only towers of silence still
functional to this day are in India but
let's move on to a place that's very
much alive and definitely not silent
number two pet like sardines in trains
India has the fourth largest railway
system in the world with almost 42,000
miles of track overall but if you want
to keep a pleasant impression of this
country in your heart then you might
want to avoid trains at all costs or you
know if you're just curious to see
people hang off the sides and right on
the roof of the train then India is the
place to go local commuter trains in
India are unbelievably overcrowded most
of the time so even trying to get in one
is pretty much impossible and don't even
bother trying to get a seat you'd be
wasting your time but still these crazy
packed trains have sort of become a
tourist attraction in and of themselves
but still I'd take uber or something for
short distances if I were you number one
pageants for true beauties
hey what's more beautiful than a huge
Indian elephant can't think of anything
hmm that's a tough one well the only
real answer is the most beautiful Indian
elephant of course there's a contest
dubbed as such that happens each year on
the full moon between February and March
and this pageant is a key part of job
Horus famous Indian festival nowhere
else in the world are these gorgeous
Giants celebrated like they are here
people get down to work preparing for
the festival by cleaning the elephants
and decorating them with an array of
stunning embellishments and clothes they
even paint colourful designs on them
then everybody votes for the most
beautiful and gracious elephant at the
festival it's really nice to know that
these kind and helpful creatures can get
so much respect and love boy you could
see that one coming now couldn't you hey
what's the most amusing fact about India

SUMMARY:
- The most common causes of chronic insomnia are anxiety, stress, and depression. Strong emotions that you experience during the day — from anger to sadness — also contribute to the problem.
- Certain illnesses and medical problems also cause insomnia. Asthma, allergies, Parkinson’s disease, acid reflux, kidney disease, and chronic pain keep a lot of people awake at night.
- Many medications can be the reason for your sleep disorder as well. These include antidepressants, thyroid hormones, high blood pressure medications, some contraceptives, and even common cold and flu meds, pain relievers, and slimming pills.
- Insomnia can indeed trigger anxiety and depression or make them worse if you already suffer from them. Cardiovascular disease and obesity are the other possible consequences of chronic insomnia
- Even the most common over-the-counter meds containing melatonin, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, or valerian can cause some serious health damage when mixed with other drugs or alcohol.
- Your bedroom’s gotta be quiet, dark, and cool. Think of all those noises coming from the street if you live in the city — a sound machine or earplugs can help you with those.
- Make things easier for your biological clock by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
- The National Sleep Foundation recommends exercising to float off to dreamland with ease.
- Stop heavy food consumption 2 hours before bed. It’s also best to have coffee in the morning as drinking caffeine 6 hours or less before bedtime won’t make things any better sleep-wise.
- The blue light coming from your phone, tablet, or computer reduces evening sleepiness and melatonin production.
- Finally, if you think naps during the day are harmless and even useful, you’re wrong. They only make things worse when it gets down to a real night’s sleep. If you absolutely can’t go without them, make them no longer than half an hour before 3 p.m.
are you familiar with that feeling when
it's 4 a.m. and you still can't sleep
and it's not even worth it now that you
have to wake up in two hours well
welcome to the club now to win over your
enemy you got to know them well enough
so I did some research to find out more
about the monster that tortures me at
night and prevents me from being active
and productive
where does insomnia come from you
probably know that insomnia is a
condition where you are unable to fall
asleep or stay in that delightful
sleeping condition at night everyone is
different and some people feel fresh and
new after 4 hours of sound sleep others
can't function properly even after 8
hours so if you wake up feeling fatigued
and unwilling to do anything it doesn't
necessarily mean you didn't spend enough
time counting the Z's it's possible that
the quality of your sleep is messed up
and you are experiencing insomnia it can
be temporary whereby you have sleep
problems for a few days or permanent and
that's a good reason to be alarmed it's
not just one problem that can be easily
solved because it's basically a symptom
of another problem which can be totally
different for different people for me
personally I believe it has to do with
my inability to relax and take it easy
this and maybe the fact that I drink 5
cups of coffee a day I don't know the
most common causes of chronic insomnia
are anxiety stress and depression and
obviously the inability to sleep well in
such conditions doesn't make it any
easier strong emotions that you
experience during the day from anger to
sadness also contribute to the problem
so in some cases treating insomnia means
treating all these mental issues certain
illnesses and medical problems also
cause insomnia asthma allergies
Parkinson's disease acid reflux
kidney disease and chronic pain keep a
lot of people awake at night if you have
one of these it's a good idea to consult
your doctor about your sleep problems
next time you go for a health check
interestingly even other sleep disorders
like apnea restless leg syndrome and
circadian rhythm disturbance when you
travel or work late night shifts can all
be the reason for insomnia which is also
a sleep disorder many medications can be
the reason for your sleep disorder as
well these include antidepressants
thyroid hormones high blood pressure
medications some contraceptives and even
common cold and flu meds pain relievers
and slimming pills and according to the
results of a study conducted at the
University of California San Diego and
Harvard University in 2018 insomnia can
even be genetic
is it dangerous
as a veteran insomniac I for one can
tell you it sure is what can you do when
you can't fall asleep at night well
obviously you start going through each
and every detail of your day then the
last month then your whole life it gives
you frequent existential crises designer
bags under your eyes and a brain too
exhausted to function even at 9 a.m.
sadly that's not the end of it
scientists at RMIT University studied
the link between insomnia and depressive
symptoms back in 2011 they concluded
that insomnia can indeed trigger anxiety
and depression or make them worse if you
already suffer from them
moreover scientists at Kaiser Permanente
Center for Health Research NW analyzed
eight years of data in 2018 and
established a link between insomnia and
the risk of type 2 diabetes
cardiovascular disease and obesity are
the other possible consequences of
chronic insomnia I personally would
rather of
and as I read in an article summarizing
the data of the American insomnia survey
insomnia also puts you at higher risk
for injury at work and outside of it
well it's not surprising when you
imagine how hard it is to stay focused
after yet another sleepless night so I
realize that insomnia is indeed a
problem that has to be solved and I
decided to try the recommendations of
someone I trust
Evette the antrum on science blogger and
former analytical chemist with a degree
in forensic science
this bright lady is a fellow insomniac
so let's see what she has to say about
it can medications really help if it
doesn't encourage using sleep meds as a
remedy according to the Mayo Clinic you
should consult your doctor as to how
many and what type of sleep meds you can
take they can offer a quick fix but they
won't solve the problem permanently Plus
even the most common over-the-counter
meds containing melatonin
diphenhydramine doxylamine or Valerie
can cause some serious health damage
when mixed with other drugs or alcohol I
have to admit that I did try taking meds
and they did help me fall asleep only to
make me crave them the next night as I
couldn't sleep without them I realized
that instead of putting myself on a pill
I'd be depended on I'd rather tried
non-medication solutions that work
something that wouldn't just ease the
consequences but deal with the actual
problem one thing I know about non
medication solutions is that they don't
give an immediate result and require
constant work but when my own health is
at stake I'm up for the challenge here's
what mrs. D on drama tried out herself
plus a few tips I found online arranged
the perfect sleep environment
your bedrooms got to be quiet dark and
cool believe it or not but after I
bought a new mattress and pillow that
were way more comfortable than my old
ones and set the perfect temperature for
myself relaxing became so much easier
think of all those noises coming from
the street if you live in the city a
sound machine or earplugs can help you
with those and blackout curtains and an
eye mask will save you from all the
annoying light pick a sleep schedule and
stick to it easier said than done
but worth the effort make things easier
for your biological clock by going to
bed and waking up at the same time every
day
now when I say every day I even mean the
weekend it's really hard but I'm getting
there work out the National Sleep
Foundation recommends exercising to
float off to Dreamland with ease walking
works just fine for me and I can go to
sleep way faster and feel better when I
wake up after a couple of hours spent
outside running and weightlifting
however didn't have the same effect
watch your diet do you like to have big
evening meals
well heavy foods and spices will give
you stomach trouble in heartburn so it's
best to have a light snack in the
evening if you can't survive on broccoli
try to do what I did and stop heavy food
consumption two hours before bed it's
also best to have coffee in the morning
as drinking caffeine six hours or less
before bedtime won't make things any
better sleep wise alcohol isn't your
friend either as it will help you song
out but wake you up a few hours later in
fact any liquids an hour before bed are
pretty much deal-breakers so save
yourself from late-night bathroom trips
by having your last drink of the day a
little bit earlier put away your
smartphone I know I know I used to check
my Instagram and email right before
going to bed and first thing in the
morning
but it's much healthier to read a book
or listen to some relaxing music last
thing in the day according to Anne Marie
Chang PhD the blue light coming from
your phone tablet or computer reduces
evening sleepiness and melatonin
production in fact it's not just
stimulating your brain with gadgets but
even having heated discussions or
arguments with other people that'll mess
up your biological clock keep a sleep
Journal this is probably the most
creative tip on the list as bizarre as
it sounds keeping a sleep Journal helped
both mrs. diandra Maude and May the idea
is to keep track of your dreams and try
to explain the connections between them
in reality for example I see a lot of my
cat making a mess in the room and a lot
of me being late for work so these are
the things I'm concerned about when I'm
awake and taking them under control in
reality should help improve my sleep
situation don't take naps finally if you
think naps during the day are harmless
and even useful you're wrong they only
make things worse when it gets down to a
real night's sleep if you absolutely
can't go without them make them no
longer than a half an hour before 3 p.m.
to sum up the results of my experiment I
recommend that you try and combine
different methods that don't involve
medications one or a couple of them will
eventually help you combat insomnia see
it works do you know any other ways to
fight insomnia let us know in the
