John and Marc's designs
animate when
spun under strobe light
he's a lecturer
at Stanford University but
he also has a
second career as an artist
and inventor
so how does he develop
these animated
designs and Mark wanted to
explore
geometric patterns found in
nature for
example sunflowers and
snail shells
spiral in a special
mathematical ratio
called the golden ratio and
Mark those
towers by manually stacking
the spirals
on top of each other he
discovered that
the layers a spiral
appeared to rise and
fall when he rotated them
that led to
his 3d printed blooms
artwork

each piece can take
anywhere from five
to twenty five hours to
complete so why
does he make them n mark
wants to
delight and perplex his
audience with
something they've never
seen before that
experience he says is an
exciting part
of being alive here are
some of his
other amazing art projects
head mark
also designs kinetic
structures he
pieces much of his work on
mathematical
formulas and geometry he
thinks it's
important to engage with
art with more
than just our eyes so he'll
let people
play with
