created by Russell
Powell he's been an
art teacher for 16
years teaching
kindergarten kids
first graders and
second graders at the
same school he
attended as a child
this hand printing
technique was created
and developed by
Russell himself I
started my process
after paying all my
students faces of
our summer program I
would paint their
faces every day after
I was finished I
would doodle on my
hand just for fun
take still shots and
just share it and
then after a while it
there how I
figured there had to
be a way to
transfer that
the process of making
the handprint
isn't simple though he
needs to
constantly apply
moisture to his hand so
the paint stays wet if
it gets too dry
it won't print
properly on the paper
another difficulty is
that his hand is
not a flat surface
which makes the
painting process a
little more
complicated it took
him two and a half
years to perfect his
art but even now he
still makes mistakes

you know many failed
attempts different
papers different types
of you know paint
mixtures and moisture
applications and
now I've got it down
to where I am today
which still those
times where it doesn't
stand the way that I
would be happy with
every time so it's a
part of that which
is kind of fun too
it's like you don't
really know I could
see one thing on my
hand and then when it
hits the paper
sometimes it's pretty
spot on sometimes
it's
Russell does sell his
work and prices
vary according to the
size of the piece
and how long it took
him to make it this
piece called mother
costs $8,000 he also
donates his work to
different causes he
cares about

of his artwork
Russell still teaches
children and says
that they are his main
inspiration
