Creating X-rays with a standard vacuum tube--- make money online

Creating X-rays with a standard vacuum tube--- make money online

hey everyone I thought I'd play with
some x-rays tonight so I got ahold of a
RCA 8:11 a vacuum tube and I hooked it

up to my high-voltage supplies this is a
30 kilovolt at up to 300 micro amp power
supply and I'm going to operate this in
sort of cold cathode mode so the problem
with turning on the filament using a
filament voltage of 3 to 6 volts to heat
up the filament the way this vacuum tube
was intended to be used is that the
filament will the the tube will conduct
so much current that we can't get the
voltage high enough to produce x-rays so
really the best way to produce x-rays is
to get you know a very high voltage so
that the electrons are accelerated very
to a very high speed inside the vacuum
tube and then when they crash into
something they produce the x-rays so if
the filament were on we really couldn't
get the transmitting voltage high enough
because so many electrons would be
flowing off the cathode that it would
conduct a lot of current before we get
the voltage high enough so in cold
cathode mode we can get the voltage
really high and inside here some of the
electrons will get going really quickly
and we'll get some x-rays out of it so
to detect the x-rays I've got this which
is a an image intensifying screen for
medical x-ray use so inside here there's
two phosphor screens and what you're
supposed to do is put your black and
white film inside here and then snap it
close so it's light-tight do this in a
darkroom and then put this you know
below the patient or whatever and apply
the x-rays and inside here the x-rays
will cause the two phosphor screens to
fluoresce and expose the black and white
film and you go back into the darkroom
and take the film out and develop it so
I'm going to put the tube on here and
this is my real careful high voltage
wiring setup this is actually a true
high voltage cable this is not this is
just a ground wire going to the power
supply and then I'm going to put the
Geiger counter nearby
I don't like that okay so first I'll try
this with the lights on just so you can
kind of see how everything is going to
go and I'll call off the voltages here
as if increase so we're at about 10
kilovolts right now and nothing much is
happening and we get up to about 15
kilovolts still nothing and we get up
close to 20 we're starting to get some
x-rays off of the system there and
what's happening is they're coming in
fits and starts if you watch the current
meter on the power supply you can see
that it's drawing them in pulses if we
raise the voltage a little bit more you
can see there's sort of an average
amount of power but there's still
pulsing and the reason that we're
getting pulsing is that there's a lot of
breakdown going on inside the vacuum
tube so the thing arcs over on an
insulator inside the vacuum tube and it
causes you know the power supply to
overload so you might be thinking how is
it possible to have an arc inside a
vacuum tube it actually is impossible
for an arc to happen in a pure vacuum
that inside the vacuum tube there are
insulator surfaces and the surface
provides a conduction path and once the
arc strikes it might even carbonize some
of the surface dirt and increase the in
or decrease the resistance of the path
so high vacuum or x-ray tubes meant for
producing x-rays usually have the
electrodes on opposite sides of the tube
because there's really nothing you can
do to keep the arc from happening across
a surface they'll separate the
high-voltage edges putting it physically
far apart okay so what I'm going to do
is zoom in on the tube and then turn the
room lights down so we can see if
there's any fluorescence going on here
so we're getting close to twenty
kilovolts and what I'm seeing mostly is
the tube glass itself
fluorescing so most of the x-ray energy
is being lost in the glass of the tube
itself I'm not really seeing the
fluorescent screen doing a whole lot of
glowing let me just see if I can crank
voltar's a little bit higher yeah I'm
not really seeing the screen glow it
looks like most of the light is coming
from the glass itself so just for kicks
I'm going to hold the Geiger counter
near where I'm standing behind the
camera and I'm going to turn this back
up to about twenty kilovolts and you can
hear that the Geiger counter is not
particularly active so if I bring the
Geiger counter closer to the tube and
hear it pick up but if I move a few feet
away where I'm standing behind the
camera the pulse rate is pretty much
background I don't hear very much so
assuming this tube can detect the x-rays
it's fairly safe to do this standing
