Dissolving lithium in anhydrous ammonia--- make money online
Here's an interesting reaction where lithium metal is dissolved in anhydrous ammonia. I placed a couple small pieces of lithium in a test tube, then connected the tube to a larger flask of ammonium hydroxide via silicone tubing. Upon heating the flask, gaseous ammonia will be produced which is condensed in the test tube by cooling it with a bath of
alcohol and dry ice. The resulting solution is brilliant bronze in color, but at lower lithium concentrations, the solution is deep blue -- a very beautiful reaction.

reaction to show you this is lithium
metal dissolved in anhydrous ammonia so
I I've seen this one other place on
YouTube and it's actually kind of an
unusual reaction to find because it
requires some some specialized equipment
and access to metallic lithium which I
now have so I started off by thinking
what I would do is put this test-tube in
the thermos and the thermos has
denatured alcohol and dry ice in it to
keep it cold and I would fill up a flask
and put it on the hot plate and then
just have the ammonia gas come out of
the flask which was filled with ammonium
hydroxide and have the gas travel
through the tube and then condense in
the test tube this ended up working okay
I was able to get clear liquid in the
test tube that I'm pretty sure was
anhydrous ammonia but I uncorked the
test tube just took this off of here and
left it sitting in the cold bath for a
while and in the matter of a few minutes
the anhydrous ammonia had turned into
sort of like a crystalline solid I'm not
really sure what happened it may have
reacted with water vapor in the air or
co2 coming off the dry ice or something
but that didn't work too well so for my
second attempt what I did is I put some
lithium metal in the test tube and then
rigged it up to the ammonia gas
generator and put the whole test tube
with the metal already in it in the cold
bath so the ammonium hydroxide is about
thirty percent ammonia by a weight I
think and when you heat it up the
ammonia gas comes off of it so this is
hardly purely anhydrous the ammonium
hydroxide when you heat it up also lets
off a lot of water vapour and in this
experiment apparently it doesn't make
any difference although maybe that had
something to do with the crystalline
impurities that I was getting but what
you can notice that the solution is sort
of bronzed down at the bottom but
there's traces a very deep blue near the
top and so depending on the
concentration of lithium in the ammonia
the color will either be this metallic
bronze or this dark blue color really
pretty beautiful chemistry
