I'm Neil Patel, and I'm here with Adam from viewership.com.
In this episode of Q&A Thursday, we're going to answer a question I get asked over and over again:
How will YouTube impact SEO in the online marketing and digital marketing space in the coming years?
Here's the thing about YouTube SEO; YouTube videos don't rank that well or drive a ton of traffic from Google organic.
Videos are ranking because Google is including everything in search results from restaurants, to places to go, to YouTube videos and blog posts.
But here's the thing that most people don't know, if you have a video on YouTube, on a popular topic, it can get a ton of search on YouTube.
YouTube itself is one of the most popular search engines out there.
But video creators aren't optimizing for YouTube search.
So don't try to create a video and getting it ranked on Google. Create video and concentrate on YouTube SEO.
I rank high for the term "SEO" on YouTube, thanks to help from Adam and viewership.com.
But the video does not rank on Google page one for the term "SEO."
Of course, ranking the video on Google will generate more views, but that particular video naturally gets like 400-500 just because it ranks on page one on YouTube for "SEO."
Think of YouTube as a separate search engine outside of Google, and create video content to do well on YouTube.
If you want to rank high on YouTube, here are a few YouTube SEO tips.
YouTube SEO Tip #1: Add transcripts.
If you add a transcript, YouTube really knows what the video's about.
Yes, YouTube can detect topics and keywords from your video, but you need to upload a transcript manually to optimize your video.
By the way, notice how we keep saying "YouTube SEO, YouTube SEO."?
By repeating the keyword "YouTube SEO" YouTube knows and will pick up on the fact that the video is about YouTube SEO and we're going to be able to increase our rank on YouTube because of that.
YouTube SEO Tip #2: Make your videos longer.
I used to make two-minute videos because I thought that's what viewers wanted.
But YouTube does not like super short videos.
What we've found is that YouTube favors videos that are minimum five minutes long.
After analyzing the data, anything over five minutes is pretty much good to go.
YouTube SEO Tip #3: Use the right keywords.
If you don't use the right keywords with tags, descriptions, and headlines, you're not going to rank well.
So how do you find the right keywords for YouTube SEO?
First, look at your niche, and see what's working.
In YouTube, you can spy very easily on your competitors.
To do this you can use VidIQ.com, and you can discover all the videos that are doing well for the keyword you're targeting, see what tags they're using, see what's working, and what's not working.
I used to think YouTube SEO was like standard SEO, you go out there, create a video, and over time it increases in rankings.
But with YouTube, the moment a video is published, the first 24 hours usually determine if the video's going to do well over time.
You need the video to do well in the first 24 hours, so do what you can to drive eyeballs to your video.
Email the video out to your lists, tweet it, and share it, and let everyone know about it, the first 24 hours matter more than anything else.
Don't worry too much about your YouTube videos ranking high on Google. If they don't, it's okay. You can still rank high on YouTube, and get a ton of traffic.
Those are our best YouTube SEO tips.

hey everyone I'm Neil Patel and I'm here
with Adam from viewership comm this is
another episode of our QA Thursdays and
today we're gonna be going over a really
popular ask question that someone add so
what is a question Adam here it is this
is from ruin M Marino Neil how YouTube
impact SEO in the coming years here's
the thing about YouTube and you know
this because your company specializes in
YouTube marketing YouTube videos don't
rank that well or drive a ton of traffic
from Google organic yes they're their
videos are ranking right because now
Google is including everything within
search from restaurants to places to go
to YouTube videos and whatever it may be
and blog posts I'm sure but here's the
thing that most people don't know and
you know this if you have a video on
YouTube on a popular topic it can get a
ton of search YouTube is one of the most
popular search engines out there what
people aren't doing is optimizing for
YouTube search so don't try to create a
video and worry about ranking on Google
create a video and worry about ranking
on YouTube for example I rank really
high for the term SEO on YouTube thanks
to your help as well but that video
doesn't rank on Google on page one for
SEO now of course Google gets way more
views but that video naturally gets like
four or five hundred views a day without
assuming anything just because it ranks
on YouTube so think of YouTube as a
separate search engine instead of Google
and create video content to do really
well on YouTube now that's going to
change I mean a drop but do you think in
the future you know Facebook's going
mostly video yeah Google organic search
is gonna turn more video no because if
users wanted on Google tons and tons of
videos they would have been already
pushing up the videos there right right
they're looking at all data and patterns
so for that reason I don't see a big
change in the search in which YouTube
videos are gonna dominate yes it's easy
to get them rankings but that's not what
people looking for most of time right so
if you want to rank really well on
YouTube there's a few things you can do
one add transcripts because if you add a
transcript then YouTube really knows
what the videos about it's not just
about them crawling you're kind of like
oh
can already detects up and put into the
subtitles is like no you need to upload
a transcript manually and by the way if
we keep saying YouTube SEO YouTube SEO
Google YouTube knows never talk about
YouTube SEO and this is gonna get high
on it YouTube SEO little trick for you
guys yes another thing you need to do is
make your videos longer before I met you
I was doing two-minute videos cuz I'm
like oh short to the point that's what
people loves quick in and out but what
is YouTube hate short super short videos
yes and then you told me you changed my
strategy about five plus minute videos
and it made the world of difference you
don't really need I started analyzing
the data and I know you analyzed a lot
of data as well but creating 20 30
minute videos versus five minute videos
doesn't really matter anything about
five minutes is pretty much good to go
the other strategy with YouTube is using
the right keywords if you don't use the
right keywords with the tagging and the
headlines and you know within the
description you're not gonna always do
the best with rankings with YouTube SEO
I know you're the master at this and
you're better than me how do you find
the right keywords and what tools to use
I mean the biggest is really just
looking within your niche and just
seeing what's working right which is
what most people don't do and within
YouTube you can really spy very easily
on your competitors so use this tool
called vid IQ you can find it video q
comm and you can literally for any
search term just find all the videos
that are doing well see what tags
they're using see what's working what's
not working and the best way to know if
a term is really good is if a video is
ranking really high for a certain term
but it doesn't have many subscribers
okay that means that like there's a lot
of room for other people to do well that
means there's room for like the channels
to do well that have a lot of
subscribers on it so and you got it
right and using that tool it'll help
them do better but that's pretty much it
with YouTube SEO it's actually not that
competitive and here's the cool part I
learned is through you I used to think
YouTube SEO is like normal SEO in which
you go out there you create a video and
over time it increases in rankings but
with YouTube the moment of video hits
whatever does really
the first hour and first 24 hours
they'll usually determine that the
videos gonna do really well over time so
in the first 24 hours if you crush it
you're gonna continually crush it if in
the first 24 hours the video was a dud
no matter what you do yet you can get a
bit more higher rankings and a bit more
traffic but you're not gonna crush it
you need the video to do really well
within the first 24 hours so whether
it's email out to your list tweet it out
and share it and let everyone know about
it the first 24 hours matter more than
anything else right now that's great so
to dance allure question it sounds like
these are gonna be separate things in
the future Oh forever there's gonna be
Google organic and this contract to be
organic and both should be part of the
strategy from here that's correct if you
can get Google organic why not get more
if you can get YouTube organic why not
get more as well in other words do a bit
of everything and don't worry about oh
are my YouTube videos gonna rank high on
Google if they don't it's okay you can
still rank high on YouTube and get a ton
of traffic there it is alright awesome
some of you guys enjoyed this definitely

reading every single one yes and we're

I can do to help you succeed makes me
