Lavalier microphone comparison: Audio-Technica ATR-3350 vs Sony ECM-55B--- make money online

My first youtube videos were made with my camera's on-board stereo microphone.  The camera is a Lumix GH1, and the mics are fairly good as far as prosumer video DSLR cameras go.  One problem is that the camera's automatic gain control cannot be turned off, and having unexpected gain changes during an audio recording is not preferable.  Another

problem is that the audio preamplifiers in the camera are somewhat noisy, and lead to a lot of hiss (high noise floor) in the recording.  Finally, it's impossible to get good sound when the microphone is positioned far away from the sound source when room tone and echoes are present.  The solution to all of these problems is to make use of a lavalier or lapel microphone and use a low-noise dedicated recording device.  I use a Zoom Handy H4 recorder.  The H4's on-board mics are really nice, but it is still preferable to have a microphone very close to the subject's mouth to capture detailed, high-quality sound.

I started using an Audio Technica ATR-3350, which is only $20 or $30 new, and the mic is OK, but has very little high-frequency response.  This can be corrected with equalizer settings in post-production fairly well.  I recently upgraded to a Sony ECM-55B, which sounds better, but I am not sure it was worth the expense.  I was really expecting the mic to have a much higher output level than the ATR-3350, thus allowing me to turn down the gain on my recorder and have a much lower noise floor.  As it happens, the mic requires even more gain than the ATR-3350.  Overall, I am pretty satisfied with my sound recording setup -- the only addition I might make is a low-noise preamp to try boosting the lavalier mic signal while adding less noise than the H4 adds during the high pre-amp gain stage.

I thought I would show you what I use to

record sound and video for my for my

YouTube videos so I recently bought a

new microphone for a while I was using

an audio technica and so I'm just going

to show you the difference so right now

you're listening to me through the

microphones on the camera and I'm

standing about you know six feet from

the camera and this is a pretty

echoey place so you're probably hearing

a lot of echoes and that tends to be

kind of annoying you know it lowers the

sound quality so one way you can reduce

the amount of echo in the audio track is

to put a microphone very close to the

sound source my mouth so I bought a

audio-technica ATR 3350 which is a

pretty low cost microphone so let's

listen to that now okay so now you're

now listening to the audio technica and

this is like a twenty or thirty dollar

microphone probably new on eBay twenty

or thirty dollars I think and I think

it's probably one of the least expensive

lavalier microphones you can find and

I'm recording it into a zoom handy h4

recorder and what I do is I just clap my

hands at the beginning of the track to

synchronize the camera to the audio

track and then put them together in the

video editing software so this

microphone is not so great I used it for

a while and you can hear that the the

high frequency response is not very good

I sound very dull and sort of worn down

so to more than usual and so to

compensate for that I can play with the

equalizer settings so now you're

listening to me with the equalizer

turned up on the high end to try to

bring back some of those high

frequencies okay so now let's switch to

the Sony ECM 55 I've got both

microphones on my caller today and I'm

just going to switch in post-production

so you're now listening to the Sony ECM

55 this is actually a really expensive

lavalier microphone that I bought used

on eBay for something $70 I think used

on eBay and it sounds quite a bit better

my only complaint is that the output

level is pretty low both the audio

technica and

sony microphones have an output level of

like negative 50 DB per identity they

rate microphones in kind of strange

units but they're both very low so I've

got the game cranked all the way up on

the zoom handy recorder here and I'll

probably add another 4 to 6 DB in

post-production to bring it up to normal

video you know normal audio levels for

YouTube so I thought I'd just give you

this comparison just so you can see what

it sounds like

even without spending a lot on the

microphone just having a lavalier

microphone close to the subjects mouth

makes a really big difference in audio
