SUMMARY:
- One day, I was doing some late-night
online shopping (surprise surprise), looking for a cell phone I’d seen in some
commercial earlier that day.
- I accidentally clicked on some pop-up
ad and found myself on a travel agency’s website. An article in their blog
section caught my eye, so I started reading.
- I decided to test this theory for
myself! I spent my money not on the latest greatest digital toy but on a trip
to the beach for me and my friends. And that turned out to be the best decision
I’ve ever made! That trip completely changed me.
- After all my travel adventures, I can
assure you - that smart professor was right because I’ve never been happier in
my life!
- Going to new places pushed me out of my
comfort zone. Before, I used to be a fan of strict scheduling and to-do lists.
Now, I love being spontaneous and just going with the flow.
- Traveling is also a great way to make
new friends. I can’t even tell you how many awesome people I’ve met.
- No matter how interesting and exciting
my new destination spot is, I always love coming back home. After spending some
time in an unfamiliar place not knowing what tomorrow holds, I’ve learned to
truly enjoy the cozy predictability of my life.-
- During that vacation, I got really
comfortable in the water, and I even took some diving lessons! And after that
incredible trip to Barcelona, I even joined a dancing class to learn flamenco!
- When was the last time you spent a
whole day without touching your phone? Can’t remember, huh? Well, I don’t blame
you; we do live in a digital age, after all. But believe me, there’s nothing
like taking a break from the Internet and just being fully present in the
moment.
- If you’re going to some really remote
place without reliable Internet or cell service, then schedule when you’re
gonna get in touch with them and stick to it. It’ll save them from unnecessary
worry.
- Call your bank ahead of time and check
if you can use your card abroad. Most banks will block a card if it’s being
used in a foreign country and the cardholder didn’t warn them about it in
advance.
- Make sure you have everything at your
fingertips. Download maps of all the places you’re going to stay, guides,
transit routes, currency converters, translators, and whatnot.
- Locals are the perfect source for free
advice on what the best restaurants, sights, and other places of interest are
in a particular city.
yeah it's payday
wait it's not for you
oh well let's pretend it is what's the
first thing that comes to mind on this
magical day
if you thought shopping spree then
you'll want to hear this you see I used
to be just like you
buying cool new stuff was my source of
joy but my life changed drastically when
I found out that real happiness isn't
something you can find in a store one
day I was doing some late-night online
shopping surprise surprise looking for a
cellphone I'd seen in some commercial
earlier that day I didn't really need it
my old one still worked perfectly but I
was just desperate to get a new phone
and I was sure that my life would be
better once I had one the mere idea of
owning it thrilled me you know what I'm
talking about right anyways back to my
online shopping escapades I accidentally
clicked on some pop-up ad and saw myself
on a travel agency's website an article
in their blog section caught my eye so I
started reading it was about a recent
study carried out by this psychology
professor from Cornell University named
Thomas Gilovich he found that we
experienced the same increase in
happiness when we buy something we want
and when we go traveling
but and this is the key point that
surprised me the most the amount of
happiness we get from our purchases
fades over time that's because those
things quickly stop exciting us and turn
into boring ordinary stuff we already
own while the memories of traveling
experience continue to supply us with
happiness hormones for much longer if I
were a cartoon character a light bulb
would have popped up over my head at
that moment can you guess what I did
next yup I decided to test this theory
for myself I spent my money not on the
latest greatest digital toy but on a
trip to the beach for me and my friends
and that turned out to be the best
decision I've ever made that trip
completely changed me within the next
two years
I took more and more trips I could
afford them because I started saving up
money instead of blowing it on
unnecessary things but don't assume that
my new lifestyle as a frequent traveler
was costing an arm and a leg
most of my trips were simply weekend
getaways to places I could drive to
within a few hours so far I've only been
abroad once after all my travel
adventures I can assure you that smart
professor was right because I've never
been happier in my life
I can even pinpoint exactly how
traveling affected me in such a
tremendous way first of all I feel way
more confident going to new places
pushed me out of my comfort zone before
I used to be a fan of strict scheduling
and to-do lists every time my plans fell
through can get super ancients now I
love being spontaneous and just going
with the flow because I know that no
matter what might happen I can deal with
it for example the one time I went
abroad it was a trip to Barcelona well
when my plane landed it turned out that
the airline had lost my luggage I know
lucky me
anyways after checking into my hotel
instead of wallowing in sorrow and
self-pity I just hit
town and did some sightseeing in the end
everything was fine and they delivered
my bags right to my hotel room the next
day traveling is also a great way to
make new friends I can't even tell you
how many awesome people I've met to be
honest I've always been kind of shy to
talk to strangers but for example when
you get lost in an unfamiliar place or
if you can't understand the menu at a
restaurant you have no other option but
to ask for help from the locals in fact
that's how I met one of my closest
friends to this day ever notice how
after even the shortest trip you look at
everything from a new perspective no
matter how interesting and exciting my
new destination spot is I always love
coming back home after spending some
time in an unfamiliar place not knowing
what tomorrow holds I've learned to
truly enjoy the cozy predictability of
my life
lazy Friday night YouTube marathons with
my boyfriend traditional Sunday brunches
with my family that same funny joke my
coworker tells like every other day I
started to really appreciate those
little things I used to take for granted
by the way remember my first trip to the
beach
I forgot to mention that I couldn't swim
back then but this is exactly what
traveling is perfect for yep to learn
new things during that vacation I got
really comfortable in the water and I
even took some diving lessons and after
that incredible trip to Barcelona I even
joined a dancing class to learn flamenco
[Music]
trying all these new activities helped
me better myself and got me interested
in foreign cultures the world around us
is so fascinating and diverse but
traveling is what made me realize it
when was the last time you spent a whole
day without touching your phone
can't remember huh well I don't blame
you we do live in a digital age after
all but believe me there is nothing like
taking a break from the internet and
just being fully present in the moment
you know when owing messages urgent
calls online drama just me and my
adventures besides when I travel I
definitely have no time or even desire
to check social media because I'm too
busy enjoying picturesque views trying
new cuisine or hanging out with new
friends
but hey I didn't mean you don't need
your phone at all because it's important
to take pictures during a trip I mean
how else are people gonna believe I
actually visited all those beautiful
places look a not a liar here's proof
all jokes aside travelling is about
making memories so I try my best to
capture some of that in pictures or
videos and I love scrolling through my
albums and reminiscing once I'm back
home
it makes me relive them all over again
in a way it instantly puts a smile on my
face
[Music]
I know some people feel hesitant about
traveling alone and I don't blame them
it takes a lot of guts to go somewhere
unfamiliar all by yourself I've been on
a couple solo trips myself and I did
take some precautions and followed a few
simple rules that I want to share with
you so first and foremost plan your trip
wisely this means buying round-trip
tickets booking a hotel room or whatever
type of accommodation you choose and
doing lots of research before packing
your bags
it helped me avoid all kinds of
unexpected situations share your trip
information with family and friends let
them know your flight numbers the
contact information to your hotel or
wherever you're staying
and anything else that'll help them know
where to find you if need be if you're
going to some really remote place
without reliable internet or cell
service then schedule when you're gonna
get in touch with them and stick to it
it'll save them from unnecessary worry
get your papers and finances in order
scan your passport or ID medical card
and other important documents so that
you'll have a copy with you just in case
they get lost or stolen also call your
bank ahead of time and check if you can
use your card abroad most banks will
block a card if it's being used in a
foreign country and the cardholder
didn't warn them about it in advance
download useful apps make sure you have
everything at your fingertips download
maps of all the places you're going to
stay guides transit routes currency
converters translators and whatnot it'll
be ideal if all these apps work offline
to
don't be afraid to meet new people but
be careful too locals are the perfect
source for free advice on what the best
restaurants sites and other places of
interest are in a particular City Plus
like I said you can make lifelong
friends just don't be naive or anything
especially when you're traveling alone
if somebody gives you weird vibes trust
your gut and keep yourself safe embrace
your solitude for me traveling alone is
like one long date with myself it's a
chance to get to know myself better
which is definitely something you won't
find in a store you know what all this
travel talk makes me want to start
planning a new trip do you have any
ideas about where I could go leave me
