Supercritical CO2 does not help visualize ionizing alpha particles--- make money online

I tried to build a cloud chamber with supercritical CO2, thinking that ionizing radiation (alpha particles) would cause localized condensation of the CO2 at the point where the fluid is coming out of the supercritical state. It didn't work, unfortunately.  I tested this idea with the americium-241 source from a smoke detector.  I will continue experimenting with CO2 ionization chambers, and it might be possible to visualize the particles with superheated liquid CO2.


A helpful commenter pointed out that alpha particles will not travel very far in a fluid as dense as liquid CO2, so I will try again with a beta emitter.

unstable state is created in the cloud
chamber so that when an alpha particle
or beta particle comes screaming through
there
it causes vapour droplets to condense
and you can see the trails it's actually
really quite striking so in my research
I also found out about bubble chambers
which works sort of and a similar idea
it uses a superheated liquid so a liquid
that's pushed past its boiling point and
is also in an unstable state so when an
ionizing particle goes tearing through
there
it causes localized boiling so you see a
trail of bubbles in the chamber so I
thought well it's supercritical co2 this
might be pretty neat since there might
be a point at which the gas or which the
substance is supercritical and it's
being cooled down and it might be
unstable at the point where it's about
to cross over into the two-phase region
so I tried it that little button in
there is a radiation source from smoke
detector from a smoke detector and
americium-241 I think source so I just
popped one open and got it out and I
didn't have any other way of checking
whether how how hot it is radioactivity
wise but I assume it's pretty normal and
as you can see there was no really trail
there weren't any that you can't really
see anything coming out of there so the
experiments both pretty much a failure
but I think there may be some ways to
make this a little less stable so I
think the reason that we didn't see
anything is that the supercritical co2
just transitioned smoothly there was
never any sort of unstable state so I
think by playing with the pressure in
the chamber we might be able to cause it
to be less stable so push a little bit
of liquid co2 into the chamber and then
suddenly drop the pressure causing the
liquid to boil quickly
and wherever the particles are going
through there it might get a little bit
more localized boiling in any case I'm
working on the aerogel which is going
well and in a few days I'm going to put
the Sol's into the supercritical drying
chamber and dry them out and get some
