SUMMARY:
- According to some legends, unicorns
looked like goats! Besides one horn, they supposedly also have a goat's beard,
cloven hooves, and a lion's tail. In fact, this less-than-graceful description
is a more traditional version of
the unicorn.
- The first mention of a unicorn dates
back to the 4th century. Greek physician Ctesias heard descriptions of this
unusual creature from travelers who had visited faraway exotic countries.
- The Chinese had their own version of
the unicorn called ki-lin. This creature had a multi-colored coat and a
12-foot-long horn protruding out of its skull. People believed that ki-lin
brought good luck.
- Some people believed that unicorns were
real but lived in remote and hard-to-reach places, while others were sure that
unicorns went extinct long ago.
- What people took for this magical creature
was an animal called Elasmotherium. It was a rhinoceros species that lived in
the steppes of Eurasia. Nicknamed the Siberian Unicorn, this was a huge
creature the size of a mammoth that had a big saber-like horn jutting out of
its forehead.
- There’s a theory that narwhals are what
inspired people to create a beautiful legend about unicorns. Actually, some
people still think that narwhals, like unicorns, are creatures of myths and
folklore.
- The narwhal’s most prominent feature is
the tusk in the middle of its forehead that looks like a horn. It can grow a
whopping 9 feet long and protrudes from the left side of the narwhal's mouth.
- One more kind of unicorn, also known as
Naso annulatus, lives in the warm tropical waters of the Red Sea and the Indian
and Pacific Oceans. Some species have a long bony horn that grows when the fish
matures.
- Even scientists can't explain the
mystery as to why the unicorn fish needs its long horn-like nose.
[Music]
you know what I've always wondered
what's up with unicorns anyway I mean
who decided to stick a horn on a horse
sprinkle some magic on it and call it a
day
all jokes aside you really can't help
but wonder with childlike curiosity our
unicorns actually real well this
question has puzzled people for 3,000
years so I decided to investigate okay
back to the majestic being we see
literally everywhere from coffee cups
and ice cream to beauty products
stationery and kids toys but what I
couldn't understand was why unicorns
were just as popular among adults as
they were among four-year-olds is it
because they're a symbol of magic and
wonder beauty and innocence elusiveness
and singularity let's start from the
beginning according to legends the
unicorn is a wild creature that lives in
the forest and represents Grace and
purity it's a strong and powerful Beast
which makes it really hard to capture
one its horn has the power to heal all
sicknesses and make poisoned water safe
for drinking oh yeah and they're pretty
vain too unicorns can supposedly spend
hours admiring themselves in the mirror
or the surface of a lake that was a fun
fact I had no idea about I've always
imagined a unicorn as a beautiful white
horse like creature with a pointed
spiraling horn on its forehead I think
that's how most people picture them
right so imagine my surprise when
found out that this wasn't the only
description of the mysterious animal
according to some legends unicorns
looked like goats besides one horn they
supposedly also have a goat's beard
cloven hooves and a lion's tail in fact
this less than graceful description is a
more traditional version of the unicorn
I was also pretty surprised to find out
that unicorns existed in many cultures
even though they had slight differences
in appearance the first mention of a
unicorn dates back to the 4th century
Greek physician teases her descriptions
of this unusual creature from travelers
who had visited faraway exotic countries
they told stories about donkeys that
were bigger than horses with white
bodies got dark red head in blue eyes in
the middle of the forehead of course
these creatures had a single black red
and white horn that was over a foot in
half long the Chinese had their own
version of the unicorn called Chi mihn
this creature had a multicolored coat
and a total foot long horn protruding
out of its skull people believed that
chi'lan brought good luck and while I
always thought that the unicorn was a
large creature the size of a horse
physiologist a twelfth century book with
tales of different beasts and legendary
creatures mentioned that the unicorn was
a small animal no bigger than a baby
goat so according to it a unicorn
standing next to you would only be
slightly taller than where your knees
are in any case I was convinced that
people have believed in unicorns for
centuries and there were not only
legends but
so first-hand accounts of people
actually coming face-to-face with one of
these unusual creatures such famous
people as Julius Caesar Marco Polo and
Aristotle discussed the nature of the
elusive Beast some people believe that
unicorns were real but lived in remote
and hard-to-reach places while others
were sure that unicorns went extinct
long ago that's when I came across a
scientific theory which suggests that
unicorns did actually exist only they
weren't exactly the unicorns you or I
imagine what people took for this
magical creature was an animal called
elasmotherium it was a rhinoceros
species that lived in the steppes of
Eurasia nicknamed the Siberian unicorn
this was a huge creature the size of a
mammoth that had a Sieber like horn
jutting out of its forehead
elasmotherium went extinct at the end of
the Ice Age but it may have been around
long enough for the ethics a tribe that
lived in northern Asia to mention this
animal in their legends in their
folklore this so-called unicorn was
described as a massive black bull with
one horn on the head
my first thought after coming across
this information was so unicorns are
actually giant rhinos well I guess it
does make sense when you think about it
I mean just look at the names of these
animals the term rhinoceros comes from
ancient Greek and it needs nose horn as
for the word unicorn it's derived from
the Latin unicorn as' or one horned but
what seeing the most interesting to me
was the fact that this latin word was
the translation of the greek word
monoceros
that sounds a lot like rhinoceros to me
plus roman author aplenty described the
monoceros as an ant the Monoceros has an
animal with the body of a horse a deer's
head elephant feet and the tail of a
lion and sticking right out of the
center of its head was a big black horn
was he not describing a rhino
I think so these facts almost persuaded
me that the Rhino and the Unicorn are
the same exact animal when I remembered
about the narwhal which is often called
the unicorn of the sea there's a theory
that narwhals are what inspired people
to create a beautiful legend about
unicorns actually some people still
think that narwhals like unicorns are
creatures of myths and folklore but in
fact narwhals are absolutely real
they're sea mammals which are close
relatives of beluga whales they prefer
the cold arctic waters near the shores
of Norway Russia Canada and Greenland
but almost 90% of all narwhals live in
Baffin Bay between Canada and Western
Greenland the narwhals most prominent
feature is the tusks in the middle of
its forehead that looks like a horn at
least I thought it was a horn before I
found out that it's actually a canine
tooth it can grow a whopping 9 feet long
and protrudes from the left side of the
narwhals mouth
in fact narwhals only have two teeth and
just the upper tooth in males grows
through the lip into that super long
spiraling tusk as for females their
teeth aren't that prominent and don't
protrude in some cases narwhals may have
two horns where both their teeth grow
through the upper lip like I mentioned
earlier according to legends the
unicorn's horn contains most of the
creatures magical powers well you could
also say this is true about the narwhals
horn only it has great sensory powers
the
thing is that the narwhals tooth doesn't
have any enamel so when water flows
through it to the nerve endings the
animal is able to analyze its
surroundings it can feel the temperature
of the sea or how salty the water is a
I'd say that counts is magic what I
understood after doing my research was
that either the Rhino or the narwhal
could be the mythical unicorn but just
as I was about to call it a day and
finish this little investigation of mine
I stumbled across something that made me
wonder if perhaps I wasn't being a bit
too hasty with my conclusions what is
the truth behind the unicorn is the
unicorn fish it'd be so obvious also
known as the nasal and a lattice this
kind of unicorn lives in the warm
tropical waters of the Red Sea in the
Indian and Pacific Oceans some species
have a long bony horn that grows when
the fish matures the blue spine unicorn
fish can reach two feet in length and
has a horn that's about two and a half
inches long even scientists can explain
the mystery as to why the unicorn fish
needs its long horn like nose during my
investigation I got to know so much new
and exciting information about unicorns
and their possible relatives but I never
did manage to come to a conclusion about
where this mythical creature came from
but what about you which theory about
the unicorns origin do you believe sound
