[Music]
so we're here today at
London's Tate
Modern to see the Hyundai
presents Tania
Vergara exhibition amongst
other things
it's an art installation
which forces
you to cry to evoke empathy
so
apparently there is a
crying room with
menthol vapour that's
supposed to kind
of forced you to cry it's
all to do with
once you cried then you
start to feel
the emotions forcing the
empathy on you
I think it'll probably work
very well on
me I have a good cry once a
month so
kind of looking forward to
letting it
all out the idea of the
piece is to try
to approach the viewer or
the spectator
through the senses so you
have sound you
have the Tosh you have
smell you have
crying and we get all our
emotional news
and information out of
Internet and
stuff that it is done in a
way that is
so quickly that you cannot
process what
you're feeling or you
cannot even
process the information
that you're
getting so I wanted for the
piece to be
someplace where you go a
little slower
and try to rethink what it
is to feel
for others the way the room
works is
through a chemical and
organic compound
the idea is that you enter
you have a
little contradiction
between feeling
clean inside feeling
healthy and at the
same time crying and I want
people to
see each other cry see does
if you see
your friend cry will you
come and hug
her and say what's going on
are you okay
like why will triger feel
somebody else
is crying or seeing
yourself crying for
no reason
so it is this situation
where will they
make you feel better
if you feel for others well
the floor
has a a giant photo of
yourself this
young refugee from Syria
who now is
studying medicine and he's
done with the
thermochromic ink so it
reacts to
friction or to heat so it
is a piece
that demands that you
participate
otherwise you just see a
black floor so
it is kind of an invitation
that is the
only way to see the work I
mean it
obviously made me cry and
that was quite
a nice feeling like I said
it was quite
comforting to let it all
out in terms of
empathy I'm not sure that I
felt empathy
because the tears were just
coming
naturally from the paper
but it does
make you stop and kind of
think about
what emotions do come from
crying and
then you do think about the
installation
and the impact that it's
trying to have
so it works in the sense
that it didn't
make me cry I'm not too
sure about the
whole kind of like it makes
you feel
things aspects of it and
the sense that
I was crying but it wasn't
because of
anything in particular it's
more just a
natural reaction but I
appreciate what
they're going for and it's a
very
important message and I
think everyone
can do with a good cry
every now and
then
