the only way to figure out your true
level of grit is to do something lonely
and hard okay I want to tell you about a
story of when I did something very
lonely and hard it was when I was on the
crew team okay I was on the rowing team
kind of triathlon thing right it was a
comp it was a competition but it was
more of a competition in my mind right
not only physical but in my mind it was
really lonely right I was competing
against everyone else so as a
competition of against myself it wasn't
there was no teams right and what we had
to do was first we had to swim across
the Newport Harbor the water was like 48
degrees it was freezing cold right so we
did that then after he swim across the
harbor you had to come and do 4000
meters of rowing as fast as you could
and then after that it was a five mile
loop and I did all of that in about 32
minutes and it was one of the hardest
things physically that I've ever done
but I really found out my true grit and
my true mental power that I was able to
overcome these challenges right I got
about halfway past the harbor I swam
across the harbor I came halfway back
and I literally almost gave up it was
that cold there was about four people
behind me that gave up they had to be
you know rescued on a boat because they
literally locked up their muscles got so
cold that they just locked up and they
gave up they said they were having
trouble breathing right and I was
experiencing those same pains and
pressures right it was lonely I was
hearing the water just whizzing past my
ears I was hearing the thoughts in my
head saying this is too cold for you get
out of the water that why are you even
doing this race just give up right I was
hearing all these negative things and
when I was able to switch them mental
dialogue to know I'm gonna compete in
this race I'm gonna be number one in
this race then I was able to switch to
just a whole nother being right
got out of that water super lonely super
hard right and physically mentally and I
continued in that race and I ended up
finishing like some are like third place
and I wasn't the most talented I wasn't
the most athletic there was definitely
guys there that were definitely way more
talented way more athletic but it's not
the physical game it's a mental game you
can overcome that in business life
relationships and your own happiness do
something hard and lonely I recommend a
physical activity go on a jog in the
morning a five-mile jog when it's
freezing cold outside right or do it at
night when no one else is out all right
I like to do things that are physically
tough because it also shows you how
mental the game is
