hey this is Ryan Hildreth and I just had
the pleasure of speaking with someone
who just started their podcast not too
long ago and has grown it to top 30
business podcasts in the world now his
name is John Danes with the no excuses
show and he's going to answer the
question of how to start a successful
podcast in 2019 so stay tuned
[Music]
everyone we are here with John Danes
now John Danes has one of the top ranked
business podcasts in the world and I
wanted to get his insight on how he got
started and how you can create a
successful podcast for yourself so how's
it going John do a fantastic man how are
you doing great man
so tell us man how did you get into like
what made you start the podcast or
something from that happen at a young
age that you had just had this
entrepreneurial spirit or was it
something that happen recently well I've
always been very very entrepreneurial
that's something that I talked about a
lot in the podcast but I had a mentor
when I was around 17 that really really
changed my mindset changed my life and I
worked with him in his company and you
know everybody a lot of people will try
to act like I was just blessed with this
great opportunity which I was but from a
financial standpoint I wasn't making a
ton of money working with him I was
doing okay but what I did get was a lot
of information a lot of knowledge so
every day on the way to work you would
just be you know killer mentorship just
here's what I did to make X this is how
I got started in real estate and just so
much insight and I would look around and
say you know not everybody has this how
can I offer this to everybody and at
that time I was listen to a few podcast
of MF CEOs one of my favorites with an
e4 Sela
nice my good buddy Casey Adams he has a
really good podcast as well but um I was
just like how can I give this to
everybody and how can I you know let
everybody have this because I know not
everybody has a mentor and not everybody
is willing to go out and put in the work
to get one maybe it's because they're
introverted or or for whatever the case
may be so that's was my goal was to just
genuinely bring value and let everybody
have that mentorship on the go instead
of taking the time to reach out to
people in instead just being able to
learn from from tons of other people
damn man that's crazy so yeah that's so
you had this kind of mentorship yourself
to be able to experience what I
experienced so that's what I'm gonna
create a podcast 100% yeah that was
Belgium I mean my main thought process
through the whole thing
awesome that's great man yeah I think
that you know your podcast provides so
much value to people and just being able
to hear other people's stories that it
is possible so what I mean how do you
get started how does one get started
creating a podcast I know there's
different platforms you can use there's
different apps that kind of dispersed
everywhere but like what do you use for
your podcast so when I got I I stressed
this on the podcast a lot and you know
there's obviously writing that the
people that do great things they don't
they're not they're not too fancy about
it they just simply start so when I
started out I just looked up on YouTube
how to start a podcast literally and I
watched a couple Pat Flynn videos and
they were like 18 minutes long and I
literally skip through them and picked
up bits and pieces because I didn't
wanna sit there for 18 minutes I'm just
because that's the way I am but uh
ordered all my equipment that night when
I watch the video got in the equipment
and started researching some stuff how
to get out there how how does you know
streamed the podcast and I came across a
website called Lipson that's the one
that I use I know a lot of people use
different sites like Spreaker and
there's a couple other ones out there
but I use Lipson it's always been my
favorite my favorite one that I've that
I've worked with only when I worked with
but um then just started creating
content my first intro episode it was
like a seven-minute episode and I just
basically provided insight insight on
Who I am and my story and the reason
that I started the podcast and I think
that was like a good good stepping stone
for everybody you know you know why is
it that I'm doing this and in my first
episode I stressed heavily that this is
not something that I'm doing just to
make money I just want to help people
and I and I want to give people you know
mentorship from from different people
and and I just simply started it wasn't
it it wasn't a hard process by any means
it was just ordering equipment I did
order pretty nice equipment starting out
yeah I spent like like maybe eight
hundred bucks on equipment you can get I
have one that I use it more than I use
my nice mic but it's one of those like
streaming mics a lot of people use it
for the fortnight screaming like 100
dollars at Best Buy all you got to do is
get one of those if you have a computer
that works
sign up for your hosting and libsyn is
not free but there are websites that are
free lids and just has a couple more
other features so you know if your
bootstrapped right now for cash and you
know you want to start a podcast there
there's cheaper options there she Bois
ago I just
I'm okay with not knowing everything but
I like to do things quality that's why I
invested so much money in the beginning
and I didn't and I always say that you
can't make a second first impression so
I didn't want to have a bad first
episode and then think okay everybody's
gonna hear this first episode if it's
not quality they're probably not gonna
come back you know you know this
obviously you you can't if you you can't
really hold people's attention for long
so you have to draw them in you have to
do things right if you want to keep an
audience so that's a that's a big tip
for anybody out there won't start one
definitely and what I took out of that
too is make an introductory episode I
never even thought about so maybe you
know someone's watching this video if
you're watching and you want to start a
podcast make sure to have that
introductory episode like John said kind
of you know tell you tell your audience
while you're making your podcasts and
what you plan on kind of setting the
precedence of what's gonna be on the
podcast right for sure yeah and I'm
actually funny enough Ryan big shout out
to Ryan really got me started when I
started my social media marketing agency
didn't have any money and just started
you know researching and learning before
I had any money to invest in any courses
or anything and just watching his videos
on YouTube but now for my agency I'm
actually doing a podcast for one of my
clients funny enough we just did the
intro episode the other day and another
thing because I know a lot of people
here probably on an agency if you do
start a podcast it's another great way
for you to average ties for your
customers so you know say Ryan has a
lawn care company and he's one of my
clients I could say you know anybody in
the Nashville Tennessee area if you need
lawn care go to Brian's lawn care it's
just a way to it's another avenue and
platform to advertise for your for your
your agency clients on as well
definitely definitely so now we know how
to start the podcast right like there's
different tools you can use use lips and
you know you can purchase you can do the
bootstrap it or you know
four on free platforms or you know buy
some cheaper less expensive equipment
but how does one get in contact with
someone that they want to interview I
think that's the hardest part for some
people is like how do you reach out what
what is your method John so 100 percent
and this is something that I've started
I feel like to get down path and for for
awhile I debated on like selling this
information and there's some stuff that
I maybe could format a course on but
there's definitely you know some
everyday stuff that I can that I can
share with people and I think that what
people don't understand is influencers
and I talked about this with Ryan when I
did the podcast with him influencers are
not going to want to talk with you if
you don't have any value to provide so I
think what a lot people try to do with
this okay I just started a podcast let
me go get Grant Cardone on my podcast
and then they wonder you know I've shot
back and forth emails for four weeks now
with Grant Secretary grants a hard
person to get in contact with so you
know you need to have the barrier to
entry a little bit lower and for me that
was the the guys from the clothing grant
entrepreneur Creek they you know they
they crush it they build a six-figure
company clothing brand by by their you
know 21 and I had heavily supported
their brand for a while and
just because I really genuinely cared
about them and I want to help them grow
and I reached out to him and I said hey
I just started a podcast and I want you
to come on and be a guest and they did
it and also I want to tell everybody
this
I studied podcast I studied you know
listen to podcasts for a while before I
started mine just so I would know what
to do what not to do and know how to
actually engage people and not make the
content boring so I felt like I had
already had interviewing people down pat
by the time I did that first episode
just do all my study so they I wouldn't
say owed me a favor but I would say they
were more willing to help me to make a
week ago so it's cool to see that but I
think that you need to utilize the
people that already close to you and the
people that you know are gonna catch
attention because I could bring on
guests personal mentors of mine that
have killed it financially worked with
huge companies and done I'm a whole deal
but if they're not notable names I'm
really not gonna be able to engage
people so I think a big one was finding
people that are actually notable names
that have real influence in the space
and then once you grow that following
you can transition into maybe older
business guys that have more experience
they can really you know act as a mentor
to - to the younger kids I guess
definitely definitely and and when
choosing people to interview - cuz I
want to dive into that as well like you
said that you try to get people with
notable names but what I found - is
there's a lot of business owners out
there who you know have you know
multi-million dollar businesses but are
very private like you don't much aren't
notable on social media like no one know
who they were unless they looked up the
CEO of this particular company right
exactly
ya know 100% and that's something that I
wanted to transition into and talk to
some more guys like that
Casey does a pretty good job of it Casey
Adams he's had some people on that that
have built hundreds of millions of
dollars with the companies that aren't
super notable names that are kind of
guys that they don't like a lot of
personal recognition and I've worked
with some guys that are like that as
well yeah so it's just depending on on
how you
you know some people like to be behind
the curtain some people like to be right
on the on the front lines but I think
it's very important that you have to
engage an audience before before you're
gonna get people on like that and one
thing that I want to say is if you want
to break into the influence you have to
break into the circle of influence on
social media so you know Ryan no see
there's there's kind of this group guys
like Ricky like Ryan like Tanner J Fox
like Q banks like a you know Austin's a
back and you have to break into that
circle because really in that circle
everybody kind of knows each other right
so Ricky what was the first person that
I got in connect with it was a big
influence and he's a Ricky Gutierrez
pretty what I doesn't know he's at about
four hundred and forty two thousand
subscribers on YouTube now and that was
all through a video that I posted on
Instagram Ricky you know messaged me and
again my goal was not to get Ricky on
the podcaster asked me anything from
Ricky which is me generally supporting
Ricky and he reached out and I said hey
Ricky I'd love to have you on my podcast
and he said great let me fly you out to
Arizona look what when what time works
best for you and I did the podcast with
him I did a podcast with his business
partner Justin and they also had perfect
timing
Ryan Scribner was visiting Ryan Scribner
is a very notable YouTube channel as
well I interviewed him as well so got
three good-sized influencers on the
podcast at that one time and then that
really gave me the opportunity to to
break into the circle of influence just
because because once somebody like Ricky
takes a bet on me it's easier for me to
reach out to Tanner J Fox or reach out
to Ryan or reach out to Austin because
these guys with big influence of so many
people messaging them that they try to
put up a wall and you know with Tanner
Tanner actually says on his website if
you don't have more than 50,000 streams
on your podcasts don't even don't even
message me just because there's that
many people that are really just
honestly wasting people's time I feel
like and you know your time is your most
valuable asset but once people know that
there's real credibility with you and
that you can actually bring them value
by coming on their podcast they're gonna
love to do it or what
is there a channel there podcast maybe
go on Instagram live you just have to
bring that person real bat-luge
definitely definitely super powerful
what you just said and also for for
someone who's watching as well just
starting out not every influencer is
gonna be the same to like I think for me
and Tanner I guess we maybe have
different ideologies on that because for
me I don't look at like how many
followers or current you know podcast
viewers you have I really look at the
person right like when John contacted me
I could tell that he was a genuine dude
and he was really getting after it so
it's like more that I believe in John
not the podcast right so that's why I
was like like yeah for sure let's get on
it because I know that John someday has
a potential to be number one business
podcasts in the world and you know it's
just kind of like that belief so don't
be afraid to reach out to every
influencer and try to provide that value
because some of them might take the bait
some of them might be like sorry I only
talked to people with this many
followers so yeah man definitely 100%
and you know a lot of influence that
I've seen their messages are so clouded
yeah that they're gonna take like three
seconds so your DM so you better bring
something real and let me give everybody
a pro tip I don't really tactical advice
here do not I always always always send
video messages I never send text
messages um and that's something I
learned from Casey because Casey like
like you'll be texting Casey and he'll
send video messages and it not only does
it build rapport but it it it takes less
time because I mean I'd rather watch a
15-second video than read a paragraph
that's you know six inches long or
longer than the phone you know yeah so
always send video messages if it builds
instant rapport credibility to I feel
like and you're more genuinely you have
more genuine connection with that person
yeah that's that's literally the reason
I was like yeah I want to get on John
show is vid and the video message
because no one does that
no one knows that and like you said you
can't bill
repor over a text it's very very hard to
do to spark that emotion but when you
send a video to someone they can hear
your voice tonality they can hear how
confident you are right you can almost
judge someone in the first 10 seconds of
like if they're a go-getter or if
they're just kind of all talk right and
you need to go with your strengths if
you're a podcaster then you obviously
feel like you have some speaking ability
so why are you texting somebody in the
end it doesn't make sense even even I've
had a couple of my buddies my buddy
Andrew he interviewed you Denis what was
that Andrew Crider he interviewed you
didn't yes yes he did yeah yeah he's had
a couple people DM DM him back they're
like hey I love your podcasting blows
and I've had a couple you'll say it to
me so I think that you like you said it
delivers that that confidence and you
know really in anything I feel like not
it whether it's in my agency or in the
podcast people are more buying into me
than there are buying into what it is
that I do exactly exactly
100% man 100% so what type of advice
would you give to someone now now they
know they know how to start it up they
know what platform to go to they can use
the platform that you have they can
search on YouTube videos now they know
how to a pro tip on how to reach out to
influencers and actually provide value
show their face build rapport but what
type of advice would you give someone
you know to be consistent with their
podcasts and really do this for the long
term okay yeah there's a couple big big
huge influencers I reach out reach out
to people like Patrick bet David and
Bradley you know big a little bit older
guys in the space and what all they've
all said to me as much my podcast is
done very very good numbers in terms of
reviews and in terms of episodes
honestly with my following and not to
brag on myself it's not the John Dane
show it's a no excuses show is what I
always say
I've done really better than any podcast
out there and I'm so thankful for all my
listeners but in terms of how many
followers now much influence I have and
how much is transitioned on to the
podcast it's unreal and even guys like
that will message me back and say I only
go on shows that have over a hundred
episodes it doesn't matter he assured
but David said that in so did Bradley so
and the reason I say those names is not
the name drop people or talk about
people but to show you these are real
people to have massive influence that
have built you know eight nine figure
companies so I think that if you're not
persistent and you're not consistent
nobody's gonna want to interact with you
in it I don't do format my podcast like
a lot of other people do it I don't do a
weekly upload and the reason for that is
I don't want to have to force out an
upload and and I guess shortcut my
listeners if I feel like maybe I don't
have anything to talk about that week or
maybe I'm just really I got a lot going
on but I'm always reaching out to
influencers I'm always being persistent
and trying to schedule people but really
what what I can tell you is if you get a
lot of interviews I know you're gonna be
at one point I had like I had your
interview loaded up I had Tanner's
interview loaded up and I had Austin's
daebak's interview loaded up and I
wanted to upload them all like that day
because I want everybody hear him right
but I would recommend and that people
space out your uploads so you can you
know not overload your your audience
with content number one but so you can
have steady content and keep people
engaged awesome man awesome dude tons of
tons of pro tips here definitely someone
could you know if you're watching this
video you have everything all the tools
you need to take action implement and
get started I appreciate you being here
John where can people find you I'm gonna
link your podcast down below I'll also
link the episode that we did together I
think that one provided tons of value
but working to reach out to you
where's the best you can find me on
instagram at john 'i'm danes give me
follow shoot me at the end if you have
any questions I respond all my games and
you can find me on iTunes and on Spotify
the no excuses show spelled like it
sounds
and you know oh I want to say one thing
in closing you know I have been able to
do a lot of cool things with my podcast
like building relationships I even
picked up new clients and made lifelong
relationships but when I started that
wasn't my goal so you know I recommend
to only start a podcast if you really
want to provide value because if not
you're gonna end up burning out when
you're not seeing those relationships
and you're not seeing you know new
clients in your business or whatever the
case may be so I only feel like you need
to start if you truly have a message and
you're truly passionate about what it is
that you do 100 percent 100% cool well
thank you I appreciate you hopping on
the channel and I look forward to
talking next time for sure for sure
thanks so much Ryan all right take care
