what is up YouTube this is Ryan Hildreth
here with one of my students Matthew
Groppi he is a social media marketer who
has you know went full time with this is
building his agency and I just wanted to
give his perspective on someone that was
brand new to social media marketing and
just took that leap of faith and you
know went after his ambition so what's
up Matthew want to introduce yourself to
everyone just let everyone know what
you're about hey guys I'm Matthew Rafi
with red beard marketing agency I
decided to form coming into this was
really wanting to do something to define
myself and really follow my passion and
where that passion led me was to helping
businesses perform better with digital
media social media their web presence in
general and realizing that businesses
themselves they don't really have time
to focus on that and that's something
that we do have the time to do it so
that we can do most effectively and
efficiently for them so but you know
that's what a passion what led me to
this and let me - Ryan's course where it
started me out giving me the tools and
tips that I needed so I could move
forward and have a successful clientele
base and a successful base for building
the rest of my business going forward
getting started like what made you take
that final leap well so I went to
Clemson University for four years and
graduated marketing and data analytics
so you think you'll doing all the right
steps and you have gone through and the
world has told you that you're going to
be successful because you've gone to
college and you have had the degree now
but mmm more often than not within the
first five years you're still gonna be
stuck in that that job that you don't
really like doing something that you
don't really enjoy doing and that's
where I was I was stuck in a job where I
wasn't getting to meet with people
because being someone that really truly
cares
about my relationships with individuals
being the clients I wasn't getting to
fulfill that and so I decided I needed
to look for other outlets so that I
could be happy and the work I was doing
nice and came to this for sure I think a
lot of people can relate to your story
especially me as well you know I think
we have similar background stories on
not enjoying the job that we were
currently at but um what what was your
biggest struggle and I think this is
what a lot of people what deters a lot
of people from taking action is getting
their first client like what was your
biggest struggle with getting a first
client how did you overcome that and
then once you landed that client like
how did it feel well so you know one of
the biggest struggles of course is just
getting out there and doing it because
you're always there's always this
feeling of nagging and self-doubt and
what if I fail what happens you know but
you have to realize that even the
failures are opportunities to learn
going forward so developing your
conversational tactics with a customer
or a potential customer that's something
that you're gonna learn especially if
you haven't done this in the past you
know you might be like what do I even
say how am I even going to introduce
myself and really just dive back into
well why am I doing this am i doing it
for money and if it's just through money
then you're not gonna be able to really
sell yourself because people can see
through that you know if this is what
you're passionate about and you saying I
really want to help these people do this
better they'll be able to see that and
how you have a conversation with them
and the tools that you bring to the
table to say let's let's build this up
together and that's what I really want
to help you to do so you know when I
I've been building my business behind
the scenes for about a month and a half
before I actually went out even spoke to
the first client and that's really what
you need to do you need to take time to
make sure that you're prepared do your
research you know like in the course
they show you how to do research on your
client familiarize yourself with who
is doing what when you go out to talk to
them because if you come in and you have
no idea about the business yeah and
they're like well what do you know about
us and you're like well you know that's
not that's not really gonna fly so you
need to familiarize yourself with what
services they provide or the type of
products that they sell so when you come
in you can really have an educated
mindset when talking to them even go
back and analyze some of their past
social media efforts insane well what
are they trying to do here you know
where are they struggling and tried to
identify that beforehand and so what I
did after I launched you know I just
decided to go downtown as companies that
I had researched and just go in
introduce myself
but not going straight to hey this is me
I have a service I want to give it to
you really just go in and befriend them
and say hey how are you doing how's the
business going what are some things that
you see in your day-to-day that you
would like to see improved in the
business and just ask some really
thought-provoking questions to make
yourself as more of a a partner that
they can lean lean on and say oh yeah
you know this person's actually
interested in what we're doing and then
through that conversation you can learn
how to interject the tools and services
you provide to build that up so it can
be questions maybe about social media
it's like I saw you know I saw this post
on your social media account about what
you were doing in store or if they you
don't even have something like that in
store a lot of the times they have
promotions that they have listed and
you're like oh you know did you put this
on social media then have you gotten
this out to your client base and a lot
of the times they're gonna be like no I
hadn't done that at all and then you're
like oh dang well so if somebody doesn't
come in the door they're not gonna be
able to see this and they're like oh
yeah yeah that that's right you know if
I don't put it anywhere else and say
you're like okay well there's actually
ways that you can take care of that and
it's just starting that conversation
with them and with my first client I
probably
and just talk to them three three or
four times before I even was like I have
this service and I can help you with
your problems because if you just go in
straight off and say I have the service
they're most likely going to be turned
off yeah
- what you're trying to do so again you
know building building that friendship
and someone that really is trying to
learn about their business is they're
passionate about about it and if they
see somebody that is equally as
passionate about what they're doing it's
it really means a lot these business
owners and providing value without
asking for money is key you know just
giving them tips and tricks and even
just suggestions letting them educating
them about things that they can do
without saying no I'm not gonna I'm not
gonna tell you any of this before
you know we signed a contract but just
say hey you know there's outlets out
there look let me tell you about them
and then through the education of what's
available you can really present
yourself and say well I can do that for
you actually I have actually pieces that
and you know going forward so the
biggest hurdle just getting out there
and doing it the second biggest is
figuring out what you say to these
people and it will take time if you
haven't done it before but keep
persevering keep having conversations
there's millions of businesses out there
and you know you can a trial and error
until you get the point where you're
like this is this is how I need you
approach the situation for sure I it's
so crazy like what you just said I think
is this is the most valuable interview
I've ever had because of what you just
said that I think a lot of people don't
understand is like the social dynamic
going into the business and not selling
them something like just providing value
because when you switch the table right
like when you go into a business and you
try to offer them something for a
thousand bucks or two thousand bucks
right away like they don't even know who
you are number one right but if you play
the role like you just
you go in you provide value they might
just ask like so what do you do right
how do you know all right or they might
even say what are you trying to sell me
on and you can be like oh no I wasn't
selling you on anything I was just
coming in like you know what I mean like
you could just play it that way you'd be
like I don't have any services I was
just coming in to check out the business
that's it coming in to check it out just
learn more about it yeah you know offer
tips because again you know a lot of
these business centers you know they may
be older or they just don't have time to
focus on these new technologies that we
think are part of our everyday so it's
definitely just going in there and
providing them with some some value
educating them on more available tools
to grow their business and then they're
intrigued yeah exactly and also like
because I think what you do is better
it's a better approach because you're
actually like you are qualifying the
client you are sent you are figuring out
what their business is about like if you
even want to work with them like you
wouldn't you probably wouldn't want to
work with someone that's like what do
you want here you know like that's very
like yeah yeah you've got the client to
because yeah again you you don't want to
be a generalist in this area either and
as you meet with more people and just
get to talk with more people you're
gonna figure out for yourself where you
really want to hone in on and you know
of course at first you know when you
start out yes you want to have several
different clients and a couple different
categories you know I have a college
apparel shop I have a couple of hair
salons I have a photography studio but
already I'm noticing that where I want
to focus is not in any of those sure
like I will do it for them and I enjoy
helping them but I know that my niche is
still to be found and there's tons of
other businesses to still check out like
tons of other categories yeah and so
yeah just don't be don't be afraid of
just having
having a conversation exactly Justin no
it's like just a normal conversation you
know what I mean you're just getting to
know them they're getting to know you
that's awesome what what would like I
guess on top of that what would be the
number one advice for someone that's
just getting into it I guess from your
experience from what the the trials and
errors that you went through what would
you say to the newbie getting into it
into social media marketing well
realizing that any question you have you
have the power of Google at your
fingertips you know like really though
you know you don't have to be an expert
or go to college to figure out all this
stuff you know in addition to Ryan's
course I probably watched countless
hours of other videos about other
subjects so you know like I said Ryan's
course gives you the basis and a great
starting point to get you to that point
where you can say alright I have myself
established like beforehand I had no
clue what to do something LLC I had you
know no clue really what I needed to do
as far as contracts and things like that
like that stuff was foreign to me
and so after that point knowing these
are the tools that I want to utilize
this is where I can go you start to be
able to branch out and build upon that
base so you know with let's just say
Facebook for example posting on you know
peoples pages and doing their management
for them and maybe doing some
advertising there's a lot of other
information that you're going to need to
learn to do it most effectively and it
might seem scary but take it in small
just bite-size pieces so maybe one day
research and just watch a video on a
step by step how to create a Facebook ad
and then that's gonna prompt some more
questions from you you're like okay well
there's a campaign then there's an ad
set and then there's an ad what goes
into each of those and so you'll have
questions that you would like to answer
and so the Internet is a powerful
resource to be able to answer those
things for yourself so best tip of
advice is determine you'll take the
course get your base started and then go
out have some questions just write them
down to yourself and say alright these
are some of the things that I really
want to get answered today and find
resources to answer those questions do
not though have a million questions on
your mind and try to get them answered
in one day you will get overwhelmed you
need to set small goals for yourself if
that's that's absolutely key because I
found myself when I first started trying
to answer every question that I had
every single one all in one day and I
was like I can't stop until I get them
answered and even one night like I
couldn't sleep I was just I'm just like
I have so many things running through my
mind so many potential scenarios more
things that I could potentially learn
and I was just like I need to satisfy
this craving for knowledge that I have
so don't do that really like I said just
take some time start out with some
simple questions and then go from there
in bite-sized pieces until you feel
adequately prepared to go out and talk
to your first client is like you know
another thing you don't really want to
do is get in the situation where you're
talking to a client and they ask you how
to do something and you're not sure how
to do it and that's still gonna happen
but at least when you get that point you
will have developed the critical
thinking and an analytical skills needed
to go find the answer you know you may
have found a great resource online where
you're like oh wait I remember seeing an
article about that
or they had some similar instructional
videos on this subject okay I'll go
check that out and you say well you know
to the client I'll be happy to I'll be
happy to learn about that now go home do
some research and come back to you with
an educate
answer don't try to ad-lib if you don't
know what you're talking about
because then that's just going to set
you up for a sticky situation later on
down the road where you've told the
client something and then you come back
and say well actually that's not the
case let me kind of back trace and then
you lose credibility yeah so yeah that's
powerful man yeah I think that's a
number one entrepreneurship it's just
say yes I'll get it done they'll figure
it out when you're at home you don't
mean yeah awesome dude well I know
