unhappiness is becoming an epidemic
especially among young people and I
strongly feel that this is largely due
to the number one mistake people make
is from the time you are five years old
to the day you graduate high school or
college your life does not stop moving I
believe this is the single most
important time of your life
to stop and learn about yourself and
learn about what interests you but
unfortunately most young people are just
too busy to do this instead of taking
time to explore and learn about yourself
most young people end up getting a
part-time job even though they have the
rest of their lives to work when I was
younger I made the same exact mistake I
got my first job when I was 15 years old
pushing carts at a grocery store and I
spent my entire summer in a parking lot
pushing carts sweating and I can
remember my family and older people
telling me I shouldn't be working I have
the rest of my life to work but for
whatever reason I had the desire to go
get a job because I thought it was what
I was supposed to do at that age and
then when I was in high school I spent
every single weekend working in the suit
department at the JC Penney near me on
top of this this one-size-fits-all
public schooling system does a terrible
job at helping young people learn about
what actually interests them in life and
then in senior year of high school at
just 17 years old
your parents your friends and your
teachers pressure you into making a
decision for the next 50 years of your
life it's funny because you know there's
all this talk about peer pressure in
high school you're not supposed to jump
off a bridge if your friends jump off a
bridge but if all of your friends are
going to college you should feel
pressured to go to college as well I
would call that a double standard you
are encouraged by everyone around you to
go into debt pursuing something you may
or may not be interested in because you
really haven't had the time to even
learn about yourself and what you
actually like and the unfortunate truth
is most young people give in to this
peer pressure and go to college
immediately after they graduate you are
making a decision for the next 50 years
of your life
on top of that if you tell your friends
or your parents or your instructors that
you want to take a year off and take
some time to learn about yourself and
what interests you before you make a
decision they tell you it's not a good
idea they tell you to keep going to
school while you have the momentum so
you're most likely given and you go to
college immediately after you graduate
high school so you graduate from college
and immediately you are being pressured
again by your parents and your friends
to get a job as soon as you graduate
because it's a bad idea to have gaps in
your resume so as a result most people
take the first job they are offered
whether or not they actually want it and
for most people including myself this
was the first time my life ever stopped
from the time I was five years old up
until this point it took me about one
month to realize I was in the wrong
field after I went through this vicious
cycle and unfortunately I spent the next
two years feeling absolutely miserable
and like I was stuck the number one
mistake people make at this age also the
mistake I made myself is rushing why is
it such a bad idea to stop if young
people took even six months between high
school and college to really learn about
themselves and what interests them I
truly believe there would be a lot less
unhappy people out there so my message
to you if you are a young person out
there watching this video do not be
afraid to stop at the end of the day it
is your life and it's your decision what
you do with your life especially when
you're making such a large decision do
not under any circumstances let anyone
pressure you into making this decision
it is your decision to make being
pressured into making a quick decision
about college is essentially a
guaranteed way to become unhappy based
on what I've seen myself and with others
around me and I want you guys to
remember it is much easier to adjust
your sales when you are young I really
just wanted to share this with you guys
because it has been bothering me because
this is a problem I see happen with so
many young people and it's something I
went through myself and I'm just hoping
that I can catch a few people or
going through this and maybe open your
eyes up to this and help you not go
through the same problem that I went
through myself anyways guys thank you
