- [Pat] Hey what's up I'm here in the studio
with Mike from Music Radio Creative.
Holding something--what is--what is this?
- [Mike] This is the AKG Lyra, 1 of only 6
Don't drop it.
- What? Let's test it out.
(upbeat pop music)
- All right, so the AKG Lyra microphone
comes in around $149, it's really fantastic,
lots of cool stuff.
On the front here you can see there is a mute button
so can mute/unmute it.
It also has the different polar patterns.
Now, you know how on lots of microphones
they're really scary.
They're like circles and hearts and you're like
"I don't know which one to pick."
Well this is really easy.
You've got front, for you, just as a single-hosted podcast.
You've got front and back so I'd really like
to test this out with you Pat, and see if we can have
one mic in the center.
- Yeah, let's try that.
- And have--so you can have a guest
either side of the microphone.
You've also got tight stereo and wide stereo.
Those are generally for musicians
who're recording their music.
But you also might want to use it in an open space
out in a park, in nature or whatever
and get the ambience all around you.
So it can do many, many things, it'll fit in your carry-on.
Flip it around, you got a polar pattern selector there.
So you can choose on the front
which ones you want to use, which patterns you want to use.
You've also got microphone volume here
so you can twist it and get the right level
into your audio editor or into your zoom recorder
whatever it is you're using.
And on the bottom, if I turn it back around and flip it up
like that you got a nice USB-C connection--
- Oh, it's a USB.
- Yes! So everything is going USB-C, so is this microphone.
Plus you got a 3.5 millimeter input there for headphones.
And you can adjust the volume
of your headphones up here on this dial.
It is really, really cool.
- So you got a access to this before anybody else.
There's only 1 of 6 in the world right now.
- Yes.
- But we'll all gonna get access
to it very soon, right, if you want to check it out?
- Yeah, you can order it right now
and it's shipping out very soon.
- OK. Should we test drive it?
- Yes.
- Let's do it.
All right, we have the microphone connected to the computer
we're gonna run a couple tests.
Test number 1, Mike's gonna record a solo clip.
And then test number 2 we're actually gonna record
on both sides of the mic and show you how to run that
and we'll see what it sounds like.
So you'll eventually hear the audio click in
as soon as we hit recording.
What you'll hear is the audio from the mic itself.
So that you can just hear what it sounds like.
So, Mike, I'm going to hit record.
So you ready?
- I'm ready.
This is me speaking into the front
of the AKG Lyra, selecting the front pattern.
So only the front side of the microphone
is picking up my voice right now.
And checking the levels in audition they look pretty sweet.
So this should be a decent enough sample
for you to understand how
the microphone might sound for you.
- All right, so now let's try two people.
What do we have to do to make that happen?
- All I did was just click this, I turned this over
to the left as I'm sitting facing it, turned it to my left.
And now we're on front and back.
So, this is front and back, I'm leaning in and talking
and I've moved my position and Pat, also we should be able
to hear you from the back side of the microphone.
- Yeah, so, hopefully this sounds great.
You can all see that I'm speaking into this side
Mike's speaking into this side.
It's recording it in the audio and you're hearing
exactly what's being picked up right now.
So you tell us, how does it sound?
Good? Bad?
So-so? What do you think?
Leave a comment below.
All right, Mike so what's the consensus for solo shows and
interviews in person using one USB device.
What's the verdict?
- Well, I think for solo shows
I'd probably use something that was connected via XR.
If I was in a home or recording studio environment.
But if I'm out on the move as I have been doing
when I've been in a hotel rooms I would definitely
be using this to record narration and podcast episodes.
And if you're sitting on a tight desk
where you're quite close to each other the front and back
pattern seems to be really sweet
if you want to have a guest with you.
You don't have to sit them beside you
and share and hold the mic.
You can sit opposite and actually have a discussion
which is cool.
- That's really amazing.
The only this is, and this is--
you can't record both sides into separate tracks, right?
- Oh, that would be amazing but no.
- Not yet at least. Not yet at least.
Are there any other comparable mics to this in term of
one that you can use for interviews like this in person?
- So I would say the nearest, sort of, comparison mic
to this would probably be something like the Blue Yeti.
Again, a very popular mic
with many different polar patterns.
That has a view more like as omnidirectional.
It think it has a front and back as well.
It has a cardioid.
So yeah that's another one that's a very popular choice.
- What about for live-streaming, how's this thing
gonna work out for people?
- For live-streaming I think it's gonna be awesome.
I think if you're a podcaster, YouTuber, you're a gamer
who streams online.
Or even if you're a musician and you wanna like
jam away and get some like stereo sound.
This might can do stereo as well.
So, yeah, it covers a lot of bases.
- Beautiful.

Mike, thanks for coming in the studio, giving us the rundown
showing the--this very rare piece of kit here.
And really excited to get my hands on a Lyra
so I can try it out myself.
