finishing school my main goal is to go to college and get a degree in a field
that would allow me to get a great paying job upon graduation becoming a
doctor or lawyer was off the table and I had always heard that accountants made
good money so based on this insight I decided to pursue a business degree as
years went on I continued to study racking up more and more accreditation
with the hope that the more education I got the more money I would make in the
future fast forward seven years and at the age of 25 I had three degrees and

well not exactly sure at a job but I definitely wasn't making it rain in fact
I was making the same amount of money that my friends were who would only a
fraction of the education I did admittedly during this time in my life I
did a lot of reflecting on the choices I had made and wondered if the educational
path I had chosen was perhaps the wrong one at a grander scale I wondered if the
education system was letting me and the majority of its students down I asked
myself why is University so overrated almost everywhere in the world schools
and universities are overrated not because of the quality of the education
they provide but because of the degrees they confer society puts a high value on
college not because it's the source of education but because it's the
institution that has been awarded the ability to issue the decorated paper we
call a degree if you don't agree with what I'm saying take a moment to
envision how school will be different if they stop giving out these certificates
of completion people would no longer be attending school for the degree and
instead they will be focused on increasing their knowledge which is how
college should work instead students focus on maximizing their marks and
devalue the merit of absorbing and understanding as much content as
possible the degree of painting strategy more often than not leads to students
memorizing just enough to pass exams and ultimately get the grades that it will
allow them to graduate when you graduate with a degree you can trade that piece
of paper for a job or more specifically for money but as soon as you start your
job you may come to realize that obtaining just enough knowledge to get
by isn't enough to become a top performer in your new role moreover you
may even find that information you were taught in college was severely
out-of-date compared to the business realities you are now facing with all
this being said yes there is value in going to college fields like medicine
and engineering where regulations are needed to ensure the quality and safety
of work performed needs to be monitored and upheld and an institution like a
college is a great place to do this however most people aren't working in
these professions which brings to question how valuable other degrees
truly are and if there are other viable ways to obtain the knowledge you need to
excel in just about any other field let's now look at five things that are

world we have every single piece of information at the tips of our fingers
simply open Google and you can learn just about anything imaginable from how

of Google search and quite honestly I believe we tend to undervalue this
magnificent tool what other resource can grant you access to information on such
a large variety of topics not even the world's best encyclopedias can remain as
up-to-date as Google meaning that the search engine is the source of truth
however you and I both know that not everything on the internet is credible
and that you should be selective in what sources you use when embarking on your
googling journey but for the most part the information you come across is valid
moreover the same benefits we can realize using Google can be had with my
other favorite platform which is YouTube whenever I tell people that I don't like
social media they are quick to remind me that YouTube
is a social media platform and while they are right it is so much more than
just that what is the definition of social media anyways to me YouTube is a
university and even better than any University in fact during college I
found myself enrolled in numerous courses with below average teachers
meaning that I had to rely upon my own independent learning in order to pass my
classes the situation was particularly bleak in my statistics course so to
supplement the information I was getting out of the textbook I began searching on
YouTube for help without much effort I came across numerous tutorial videos
that helped me master the information I was struggling with and ultimately led
me to achieving one of my highest college grades in that class ask any
student going through school right now and they will tell you that YouTube
truly has become like a second teacher to them you see the foundation of
Education is not the uniform we wear to school nor is it the test or even a
degrees the foundation of Education is information period if I can get enough
information about any field be it law medicine accounting or entrepreneurship
I can get an education in that field besides having more information than any
university could ever hold Google is more valuable than college because it is
not only a free resource but it is available 24/7 in college you have to
wait until your next course a class to acquire new knowledge but with search
engines you can research non-stop and continue to fill your well of knowledge
number 2 podcasts did you know that if you listen to audio training programs in
your car on a consistent basis you can consume the equivalent of a university
degrees worth of information in just two years fortunately for us we don't have
to be in the car to listen to podcasts anymore with a simple app on your phone
you can learn wonderful things that can change your life not to mention as
opposed to in class learning that is generally the case in college podcasts
allow you to learn while doing other activities for instance I love listening
to Planet Money to stay up-to-date on all the world's most interesting
financial topics while also doing laundry or cooking this is a benefit
that college could never provide moreover like Google and YouTube
podcasts are free of charge which means that if you value education and

being an educational tool is real life experience I remember when I graduated
from a master's program the program that was supposed to teach
everything I needed to know to succeed in accounting I was unpleasantly
surprised at how much I didn't know when I started my job I truly felt like I had
to start from scratch which was frustrating after having invested tens
of thousands of dollars and more than half a decade into my post-secondary
education luckily however the learning came fast and furious when I began my
career in consulting maybe it was a fact that I was working with experienced
individuals or that I was logging much more than a typical 40-hour work week
but what I learned in just a few years in the sector was much broader and
valuable than my seven years in university what I came to realize in the
first few years of my career was that real-life experiences provide a much
more thorough opportunity to learn than a textbook ever could while I had some
technical knowledge for my time in school working with clients on a daily
basis allowed me to improve not only my technical but my soft skills as well I
learned how to negotiate contracts how to present to executives and how to deal
with interoffice conflicts I am sure I would never have learned these valuable
skills in school but as a member of the working world these skills were required
by putting in my hours every single week now do I think these five things are
more valuable than a degree in short it depends there are certainly many
professions where degrees are required however the world is trending more
towards all viewing knowledge and proficiency than certificates in fact
major companies like Google and Apple don't require their employees to even
have a college degree anymore as they are no longer a sign of skill and won't
make you an all-star at work instead of seeing college as your only Avenue for
learning open your eyes to other valuable education channels and soon
