How Long Does It Take To Make A Friend?

Have you ever looked at your friend and thought how did we even become friends
in the first place at times it can be baffling to think that someone who is
once foreign to you could become such an integral part of your life while having
this thought have you ever wondered how long it takes for two people to progress
from strangers to best friends well in this video I will share recent study
results which will learn exactly how long it takes to form a new acquaintance
or best friend in a report published in 2018 professor Jeffrey hall of the
university of kansas shared his findings from a study performed to determine just
how long it takes to make a new friend his that he consisted of three hundred
and fifty five participants who had recently relocated to a new place within
the past six months these participants were asked to identify someone they had
recently met for the first time and how much time they had spent with this
person to date they then asked the participants to document the
relationship with his newly met person on a relationship scale that ranged from
acquaintances to best friend Hall decided to conduct a secondary
study with a hundred and twelve first-year students from his University
asking them to name two new acquaintances they had met since
starting school and tracked the number of hours spent with these people over
the course of the nine week experiment not surprisingly both studies performed
indicated that there was a correlation between time spent together and stronger
relationships all determined that it takes about 50 hours of interaction to
move from acquaintance to casual friend in about 90 hours to move from casual
friend to friend but of course we want to know just how long it takes to build
the ultimate friendship bond the very cherished best friend Hall reported that
it took more than 200 hours to qualify as a best friend Hall noticed through
his studies that the types of interactions that people had also
contributed to the progression in the relationship amongst one another for
instance students tended not to progress in their friendships when they did not
see each other outside of class furthermore some adult participants
reported that while they had spent hundreds of hours with their co-workers
they still would only categorize them as acquaintances even if the accumulated
hours wouldn't indicate that the relation
chips should be stronger Hall attributed part of these anomalistic findings to
the context of these social interactions closer relationships were reported when
time between participants and their new acquaintances was filled with joking
around or meaningful conversation versus exchanging standardized pleasantries
therefore when two people made genuine attempts to update one another on their
lives it indicated a desire to stay in touch and invest in the progression of
their ongoing relationship no matter how strong it was at the time of the
interaction the final conclusion that Hall came to through the two studies
performed was that like anything else if you want something to grow and blossom
you must invest well investing 200 or more hours to gain a new best friend may
seem like a lot of work the mental and physical benefits that are realized
through these friendships are priceless therefore no matter how busy your life
is making time for friends should always be a priority thanks for watching if you
