hey what's up this is Pat here and I
wanted to create this quick video for
GarageBand directly to an AIFF file now
why would you want to do that instead of
directly to an mp3 file for say your
podcast well if you're using this tool
here called the level later which you
can actually get at conversations
network.org slash level later it's a
free tool to help you level out the
volume the volume in your entire episode
you know if you have interviews and
stuff and the volume levels are
different you just run a file through
level later it just makes it all nice
and at the optimized volume throughout
the entire show but it has to be an AIFF
or a wav file if you're using audacity
you can just export as a WAV if you're
using GarageBand it's a little tricky if
you have if you're doing a podcast to
export it directly as an AIFF but I'm
going to show you exactly how to do that
right now so typically you know if you
just want to export as an mp3 you would
go to share and then export podcasts to
disk and now there's no option for AIFF
you only have AAC or an mp3 which you
would usually do now to cancel you want
to cancel that you want to highlight the
podcasting track here this one at the
top if you have this and you want to go
to track and then delete track you want
to get rid of the podcast track now when
you go to share an export song to disk
you have the option to either compress
it in which case you would have that
same menu you had before for AAC or the
mp3 encoder or you can unclick this and
click export and what that does is it
allows you to let me put this in an
iTunes folder because that's where I'm
going to edit the tags that turns it
into an AIFF file so it's going to run
the mix down and I'm gonna come back and
show you what it looks like when I drop
in that file that I just exported right
now into lovey okay so we're done
exporting as an AIFF file so I'm going
to open up the finder here and open up
episode 54 folder iTunes folder and here
it is episode 54 ai F if you right-click
and get the info you'll see it is
actually an AI FF audio file and you see
the the file size is rather large now
that's kind of why this tool needs this
because it's kind of almost raw data
here so what I'm going to do is open up
level later I'm
just gonna simply take this AI F file
and drag it and drop it into the level
later see little things moving around
and this little bar is gonna go all the
way up to a hundred percent okay now
we're done is you can see it added a
second file here with dot output dot a
if' that means that's the one that comes
out of the tool and that's the one you
want to use when you then convert to an
mp3 file so I'm just gonna show you
really quick how I do that but at this
point you have the file that is gonna
sound great all the levels are exactly
the same so I'm gonna move this out of
the way I'm gonna open up iTunes and go
into my playlist here as you can see I
have 53 episodes so far I'm gonna drop
in let me just so I can show you I'm
just gonna drag and drop this into my
playlist and it's gonna upload episode
54 dot output there now this isn't the
one I want to tag I want to tag the mp3
file so first I need to convert this
into an mp3 file and I can do that right
here in iTunes so I'm actually gonna go
to file actually iTunes preferences and
just make sure that one of these
settings is is is set for mp3 when I go
over here what it says when you insert a
CD actually if you click on import
settings next to that you want the
import using mp3 encoder so make sure
that's mp3 okay click OK now I'm going
to right click on episode 54 here and
then down here it says create mp3
version so I'm gonna click on that and
it's gonna do its thing that uh and
actually you can see this converting up
here in the upper left hand side I'm
gonna click on that and you can see the
bar is going up to the top now it's not
gonna put this file back into your
playlist you're gonna need to put it
back but what I'm actually gonna do is
go to my music library actually songs
and you'll see there's two versions here
episode 54 dot output and episode 54
output one of these is the AIFF file and
one of these is the the new mp3 file and
you can see I have the size here it's
significantly smaller 400 2.9 meters is
36.6 and
you don't have sighs here you can just
right-click on on this bar in iTunes and
you'll see you can have the option to
show date added I also earth not date
added but size down here but I also have
date added so I know which is the last
one
that I you know which is the newest file
and I just sorted by that so I know this
is the mp3 file so what I'm gonna do is
actually go back into my playlist I'm
gonna go to the SPI podcast I'm gonna
delete this one cuz that's the AI F file
so I'm gonna drag drop it into the trash
I'm gonna go back to my songs I'm gonna
go to this one and then drag and drop it
into SPI podcast now if I go to my
playlist SPI podcast at the bottom
you'll see it here episode 54 output I'm
gonna right click that get info and it
should be if I go to summary it's gonna
say MPEG audio file thirty-six point two
six megabytes and this is the one that
we want to tag so we could then upload
our artwork do any of the fancy stuff we
need to do you know name of the episode
you are the artist and all that good
stuff like in my podcasting tutorial
video number three and I'll link to that
right after this but again I just want
to show this to you because in that
original video I had a crazy workaround
that had like ten steps this is just two
or three steps to get that AI F file
into level later and then the mp3 file
from that so hope you enjoyed that video
hope is helpful and good luck with your
podcast to keep me posted on how it's
going
