How To Focus When Studying

It was a warm spring night while all my friends were out partying I was stuck
inside writing a report that I had put off until the last minute I sat on my
desk until the wee hours of the morning alternating between a few sentences of
the report writing and checking snapshot to see all the fun my friends were
having the fear of missing out overtook my body leaving me feeling alone and
frustrated as I had to miss out once again on creating memories with my
friends as they look back on the course of my academic career I realized that I
missed out on a lot of great experiences because I had poor time management
skills I would let distractions get the best to me which meant having to cram
for exams or hand in reports just minutes before they were due luckily
during the end of my master's program I became an avid reader and stumbled
across the book called deep work little did I know that this book would change
my life forever for those of you who don't know deep
work is a book written by Cal Newport that outlines a value of concentrated
work and how to reach high levels of productivity in a distracted world we
live in as soon as I got reading this book I knew that it would save me for my
distracted ways and help me get more done in less time so I can enjoy other
activities that I had previously been missing out on in just an afternoon
I read all 304 pages and what was my first period of deep work and ever since
I've implemented the deep work state of being to become more productive than 95%
of people you've probably heard of the term flow state before and when you are
doing deep work this is what you experience in the flow State your work
is easy effortless and the quality of it is great time flies by and when you're
done you feel incredible in afternoon with zip iron would magically have a
week's worth of work done but being able to harness the state of deep work didn't
happen overnight when I look back there were four key elements that had to come
together for me to realize the true benefits of this concentrated state of
which the first was reducing the instructions in my life before my deep
work days I would find myself checking my phone literally hundreds of times a
day and constantly refreshing my email inbox if I had to guess I would say that
I spent a few hours each day on these zero value activities which could have
been put to better use then I had a moment
clarity and ask myself are these destructions really worth being able to
get more done and unlock more free time to spend with my family and friends it
was at this point that I knew I had to make some changes for this involves some
rewiring of my habits if you know anything about habits you will know that
it's easiest to form a break a habit when you set a singular focus and for me
that was reducing my tendencies to check my phone my goal was to avoid using my
phone before breakfast and it took just one day for me to have a moment of
weakness but I stuck with it and after a few weeks I could breathe all the way
through lunch without these distractions I then turned my focus to what
activities would benefit the most from periods of deep work and the most
obvious one was my studies I had my CPA exams looming and needed to start
getting down to business I started by trying to study for 30 minutes straight
which I first felt like an eternity but after about a month I found that I could
get locked in on my notes and before I knew it
three hours would have gone by I was retaining full chapters of my textbook
in mere hours which would have typically taken me a few days when my work habits
weren't as sharp with all this productive time I was feeling really
good about my work style but I felt like something was missing at night as much
as I knew the next day would be extremely productive I dreaded cracking
open the books luckily enough at this time in my academic career I was reading
the book the hoppiness advantage by shauna core and came across one of his
six daily happiness exercises called the fun 15 this exercise involves spending
15 minutes doing something fun every day for me this involved watching mindless
YouTube videos before my intense study sessions to get my mind in a happy and
relaxed state before I got down to business with all these pieces in place
I was able to go from a mediocre student to an academic stud getting more done in
a few hours than most got done in a day and helping me pass one of the hardest
exams known to man thanks for watching if you enjoyed this video please comment
