It's Saturday night and you open up your iPhone your fingers are drawn to
Instagram and you suddenly find yourself scrolling through a plethora of new
posts and stories it seems like every single person you know is that partying
multitude of people having a great time after sinking ten minutes into the
social media vortex you ask yourself why is my life so lame compared to all my
friends now imagine experiencing this fear of
missing out and feeling like your life was boring compared to your peers on a
daily basis well for most students this is a reality
as students we are being constantly exposed to the highlight reels of other
people's lives leaving us questioning why your own lives don't appear to be as
exciting this constant exposure can have very mental impacts on those attaches
therefore in this video I want to talk about my own struggle with social media
usage and how it affects students as a whole my social media journey started
like that of many others as an early adopter of mainstream platforms like
Facebook and Twitter and over time has expanded to Instagram and snapchat from
my days in college all the way through my bachelor's degree I was a daily
social media user tens of times a day I would unlock my phone and get my fix of
social like a junkie getting his daily dose of crack little did I know that
every time I was opening these apps I was blasting my brain with dopamine all
the notifications from comments tags and new posts were drawing me in and
changing the chemistry of my brain but like most people I didn't think much of
it and carried on with my extensive social media usage during my masters
however my social media usage only got worse I went from a casual user to
trying to establish a business on Instagram my frequent app usage which
was already out of hand me
even more extensive I would begin to stress out if I lost followers and
question my own self-worth when my post would receive less likes in normal
needless to say that my social media usage was starting to affect my mental
well-being unfortunately this is just part of the damaged social media was
imposing on me you see taking this intensive program required me to study
every evening during the summer while my friends would be out getting drinks or
enjoying their warm summer nights not only did this contrast in lifestyle
between myself and my peers trigger a high degree of fear of missing out but I
found myself constantly checking my social media apps to try and have even
the slightest sentiment that I who was involved in the fun this constant phone
usage wore down my mental state more every single day and began to
significantly reduce the effectiveness of my studies as you can expect my
academic performance began to slide as social media had taken full control of
my life luckily a few months before my CPA exam
my girlfriend confronted me on my social media usage she told me bluntly that I
was being consumed by my phone and that things needed to change if we were going
to continue to be together after that talk I took some time to reflect I
compromised my mental health my studies and my relationship for a little icon
that resided on my phone with a fresh perspective on the situation I decided
to go cold turkey on social media for the months leading up to my exam no
Instagram no Facebook nothing it was like I was living in the
dark ages in a sense but it was also incredibly liberating I no longer felt
the constant need to check my phone and was able to focus my attention on the
things around me like my girlfriend my family and my studies I share my story
because they know that there are many other students who struggle with the
same issue they are constantly being bombarded by their peers most glamorous
moments you see your friends going on exotic vacations or meeting celebrities
and wonder why you have never done any of these things yourself not to mention
you find you being overwhelmed by fitness models
posting images of their perfect bodies that you could only possibly achieve
with years of dieting and Photoshop practice in short this highlight reel
xposure is a one-way ticket to a depressive state and one that should be
monitored carefully the thing to keep in mind when using these platforms is that
you are only seeing the 1% of life that your peers want you to see there are no
images of them spending night after night studying alone no post of them
looking bloated after a big meal or of them feeling lonely on a Friday night
because they decided to stay in so the next time you find yourself at home
scrolling through social media on a Saturday night or at any time for that
matter keep the following things in mind number one you're only seeing the highs
and not the lows but the lows do exist for everyone number two it's normal to
feel a sense of missing out but that you to have fun and exciting moments in your
own life and number three there is more to life than what happens in your phone
so put it down and live in the real world thanks for watching if you enjoyed
