meet Harry Harry is an ambitious 25 year old lawyer who lives in New York City
along with his girlfriend Sophie Sophie is a 27 year old librarian who works at
the New York City Public Library Harry and Sophie began living together after
university but originally met in high school which is where the relationship
began now ten years later their love is as strong as ever but things haven't
always been easy you see the stress and pressure of becoming a lawyer put a lot
of strain on their relationship as Harry spent countless hours studying in
University and preparing to write the bar exam but luckily for Harry Sophie
was always patient with them offering him all the love and support he could
ever need to pass his exams and become a fully fledged lawyer after completing
his studies the two were happy to start their professional lives together and
put the stress of the past behind them unfortunately just four months ago
Harry's dad had a massive heart attack and passed away
both Harry and Sophie were obviously devastated by their loss but Harry was
understandably taking it much harder to cope with his loss Harry began to fill
his life with distractions just about every night of the week Harry would
either work super late or go out drinking with his colleagues to help
keep his mind off the loss of his dad well so if we began to feel a bit
neglected she knew how bad Harry was hurting and didn't want to add any extra
stress in his life by sharing with them how she felt
Harry continued this behavior for months after his father's death and like a good
girlfriend Sophie supported him every step of the way every night so he would
wish to herself that Harry's morning would end and now when things got better
he would propose and they could take the relationship to the next level
you see Sophie always dreamt of having a family and as she got older she became
more impatient to start the next chapter of her life
the sense of urgency only got worse when she had to watch all of our other
friends get engaged married and even start having kids one day at work Sophie
got a text from her best friend Steph saying that Sophie needed to come over
that night as she had big news to share with her Sophie became extremely excited
as not only she got to spend time with her best friend but she finally got to
have a break from being home alone as Harry's nightly bar binges continued
immediately after dinner Sophie sped over to a friend's house eager to hear
the news she had been waiting for all day
the two girls sat in Steph's living room and barely containing her excitement
Steph blurted out I'm pregnant both girls jump for joy barely able to
contain their excitement Steph went on to explain how she was already thinking
of furniture and colors for the baby's room but Sophie heard none of it all she
could think of was how far behind she was all of her friends and she began to
wonder if her and Harry were ever going to take their relationship to the next
level the next day at work Sophie's still felt bothered by the fact
that all of her friends were progressing in their relationships and so she
decided to text F and ask her what she should do she began to explain to Steph
how Harry was not handling his father's death well and how she was becoming
concerned that their relationship might fall apart Steph
sent back a text to sophie containing one simple but powerful word ultimatum
for the rest of the day Sophie saturd s contemplating the idea
of giving Harry an ultimatum on one hand she knew that he was still suffering the
emotional consequences of his dad's passing but she also didn't want to wait
forever if Harry had no intention of moving forward and proposing about a
week later sophie had finally decided and on a summery Thursday night as Harry
was about to slip out to the bar with his friends sophie stopped him and told
him they needed to talk the two sat down and Sophie nervously muttered if you
don't propose to me then I don't think we can be together anymore Harry sat
there visibly upset and then responded I'm sorry Sophie but I can't propose to
you Sophie then dashed out of the room crying and Harry sulked knowing that he
had just broken her heart the next morning Sophie and Harry both
went to work not having said a word to each other after their fight
Harry received a text from Sophie saying I think we need a few months apart to
think about where this relationship is going Harry felt like a knife had just
pierced through his chest but managed to respond acknowledging her wishes
fast-forward a week and Harry found himself living in his grandfather's
attic in a suburb in Brooklyn well Harry's grandfather Fred was extremely
happy to have company especially after the death of his son he just liked that
it had to be under such unfortunate circumstances that first week apart from
Sophie left Harry distraught Harry already had tight deadlines from his
boss but found himself barely able to concentrate as he missed Sophie dearly
one Friday evening Harry's grandfather fred was watching TV when he heard a
noise coming from the attic wondering what it was he made his way upstairs to
his surprise he saw Harry sitting on the edge of the bed bawling uncontrollably
fred knew right away that harry miss Sophy immensely Fred then asked Harry
why he was so hesitant to propose to Sophie if he loved her so much
Harry stopped crying and said that proposing to Sophie is the thing he
would love to do most in the world but that he couldn't just yet Fred sat
there confused as Harry clearly loved Sophie and made good money as a
corporate lawyer so money shouldn't be an issue
Harry then explained that after his father's death he was so emotionally
torn that the only thing he could do to ease the pain was to drink or go
shopping Harry then explained to his grandfather that because of these
actions he had barely any savings which meant he definitely couldn't afford an
engagement ring for Sophie fred was saddened to hear about Harry's
misfortune and offered to tell Harry a story that he knew would help Harry get
back on his feet Fred began to explain to Harry that as a
young adult he had worked as a fruit merchant at a local food market he then
went on to explain that like Harry he too wanted to get married but felt that
it was nearly impossible to save up enough money for an expensive purchase
like an engagement ring now Harry knew that this story ended
well as his grandparents were married for more than 50 years which made him
all the more eager to find out how his grandfather could have saved up the
money for the ring Fred explained that during his time as a
fruit merchant he had an amazing boss named Phil Phil was almost like a father
figure to Fred and Phil recognized that Fred had a good
heart but was very irresponsible with his money
Fred would always talk about how we would love to propose to his girlfriend
but figured it would be years before he'd have the money to do so about six
months after Fred started working at the fruit stand Phil approached Fred and
gave him a handful of money Fred was extremely confused Phil began to explain
to Fred that he recognized that Fred was not very responsible with his money and
that's saving up money for his girlfriend's engagement ring would take
an eternity so every paycheck Phil held back twenty percent of Fred's pay so
that he could save the money that he knew Fred would undoubtedly spend at
first Fred was upset that he had been shortchanged numerous pay checks but
then realized that it was probably the best thing that could ever have happened
to him and his future wife Harry sat there dumbfounded by his
grandfather's story and inquired how he could use the same trick to save up the
money he needed for Sophie strength Fred began to explain that technology had
come a long way since his days as a fruit merchant
and now employers can set up automatic deductions to help their employees save
money he explained that Harry should open up a
savings account they will be used just for the engagement ring and to have his
employer placed 20% of his monthly and come into it then Fred made Harry
promise that Harry would give his grandfather the card to the account so
that Harry had no way of spending that money Harry agreed and began to feel a
great sense of hope that he would soon be back with this highschool sweetheart
after setting up the automatic deductions with his employer all Harry
had to do was let time pass until he had enough to afford the ring as the next
few months of separation came to an end Harry and Sophie met up at their
apartment in New York City as it - congregated in their living room Harry
reached into his pocket and pulled out a beautiful diamond ring and said the five
magical words Sophie had been waiting a lifetime to hear Sophie will you marry
me Sophie jumped up with happiness and exclaimed yes of course
after Sophie tried on the ring she then asked Harry what had changed his mind
Perry explained to her that he always wanted to marry her but he was
embarrassed that he didn't have the money to buy her the ring
she deserved which is why he had to delay proposing Sophie inquired as to
how he finally was able to afford the ring and all Harry said was just thank
