hey my name is cathlin and i got to tell
you you must start a podcast I'm gonna
spend some time here in this video
sharing a number of different reasons
why you will be missing out if you don't
and not only that I have a number of
special guests that are gonna appear
here in this video as well to help
convince you to because the podcast has
changed my life the lives of other many
podcasters as well plus the lives of the
listeners and you have people out there
in this world right now
have a business already or not whether
you have a following already or not many
people are starting their podcast to
build their following and many other
people are also starting to help grow
the following they already have whatever
the case is for you I want to tell you
why you must start a podcast and through
the course of these next three videos
that you're gonna see over the next few
days here you're also going to
understand how to get started how to
pick a show topic how to understand what
to create content and podcast about and
I'm going to show you actually how to
launch your podcast and make sure that
you actually get found because there's a
lot of people out there in this world
who can tell you how to get a podcast up
but I want you to get your podcast up
and found I want you to succeed with the
show that you're gonna dedicate your
time to but before we get to the details
about how to actually put together your
show what your show is gonna be about
and all those kinds of things I wanted
to have some friends of mine tell you
why they started a podcast and what it's
done for them
[Music]
so I started my podcast because running
a business is a lonely process and quite
frankly I just want to talk to people so
I actually used my podcast to meet
people because everyone wants to come on
everyone wants free publicity and so
I've met so many people over the years
including Pat through the podcast and
these people then go on to speak at my
event and a lot of my best friends I've
achieved just from running this podcast
we just turned into a business set
itself down so it's been great
podcasting has been huge for me because
this is like the one medium where I
could create content for like 30 minutes
an hour and people actually listen
because they're driving in their cars
they're working around the house
cleaning whatever and they will actually
listen to what you are teaching them and
that has formed some really solid
connections with my audience in a way
that no other media has
any other platform they can secure your
opinions I understand exactly what you
can start to hear stories of other
people that you're talking to and
ultimately fall in love with you in a
way that I believe no other platform can
give you if you aren't starting a
podcast this year and you are missing
out on a huge revenue opportunity I
asked my podcaster friends on Twitter
what's the best thing that has happened
to you as a result of starting your
podcast I got loads of answers Jason
said deeper connection with audience
hands down no other medium puts you in
their ear when they're driving running
etc David says I got the chance to meet
amazing people real industry leaders who
I never would have otherwise Christie
says being able to reach a larger
audience and meeting amazing guests love
a good collaboration Carolyn says
getting a fresh stream of amazing
clients that are ready to work with me
hashtag awesome
matt says I've become a better more
confident speaker noticeably less filler
speech that's for sure you're about to
hear a clip of my first recording just
to show you how much I've grown since
recording my first podcast
Ryan quit his job as a doctor Kelly gets
new clients consistently and Glen here
says earn a living talking and making
the best friends in my space and I love
that and Glen by the way has a
horse-related podcast which is amazing
Tina here asks curious to know what your
answer is Pat and to answer this
question I want to take you back into
time this is me in December of 2008 in
my bedroom at my parents house I just
moved back home with them because I got
laid off from my architecture job I was
just starting my business at the time
and I knew I wanted to start a podcast
and Here I am I just bought all this new
equipment and I want to play for you an
audio file that I published on my
brand-new blog at smartpassiveincome.com
announcing to the world that I wanted to
start a show and I got to tell you this
is hard for me to listen to but I want
to share it with you because I just want
to show you that we all have to start in
the beginning
[Music]
hey everybody this is Pat from the smart
passive income blog thanks for taking
the time to listen to this I think
that's so awesome that you know you guys
are helping me out figure out all this
new podcasting stuff I'm actually just
bought a whole bunch of podcasting
equipment for myself because I mean I
listen to a lot of podcast so I figured
hey why not do one so I mean really I
really don't know what I'm gonna talk
about yet
so I just wanted to get familiar with
all the equipment that I have right now
and uh what it's like to post something
online and hear what people think about
it so I mean you tell me should I give
up on podcasting now because my voice
sucks so bad or no should I talk a
little deeper or I don't really have no
idea so again just thank you so much for
taking the time to listen to me keep
coming back to the website I got tons of
information coming up in the near future
and let's make 2009 a great year for all
of us let's make it let's make it the
most profitable year we've ever had and
you know I'll try my best to help you
get there so again good luck with
everything
happy holidays and this is Pat Flynn
from the smart passive income blog
signing off peace so yeah that's that's
kind of hard for me to listen to but
I'll tell you I got the equipment I was
fired up as you could tell I was ready I
announced to the world I wanted to start
my show and my first episode came out
July of 2010 a year and a half later
because I had so many things that I was
telling myself that stopped me from
moving forward so because I know you're
thinking of starting a podcast and I
know that you're likely gonna try and
get in your own way and talk yourself
out of it I wanted to go over some of
the most important myths related to
podcasting to help you bust those fears
punch through those walls and actually
get this thing started
so let's start with podcasting myth
number one you have to be a natural-born
speaker storyteller or interviewer and I
hope you can tell by now that this is
not true because I was definitely not a
natural-born speaker storyteller or
interviewer it was just so hard to
listen to that audio file but I'll tell
you what helped me just getting started
in the first episode was the worst the
next one was the second worst and I just
started to get better and better over
time and once heard that you have to be
the disaster before you become the
master and I was a disaster up front but
eventually after several several months
I finally started my show and I'm so
glad I did because so many amazing
things happened since then
now I have five total podcasts smart
passive income podcast a spat the one
day business breakthrough podcast even a
food truck or podcast which actually I
recently sold and all of your beeswax
which is a podcast I created to co-host
with my son overall I've recorded over
1400 episodes of podcasts over the last
decade and have amassed over 65 million
downloads but more than the numbers
here's what else happened I've gotten to
connect with some amazing people just
like some of my friends said this is me
and Gary Vaynerchuk connecting on a
podcast and since then he and I have
become friends and we've actually both
together become advisory board members
of a organization that helps build
schools around the world and we connect
every once in a while and he's great and
we chat and it's this wouldn't have
happened without the show the podcast
has directly affected my income as you
can see this is from an income report in
July 2017 course sales amassed over or
nearly a quarter million dollars in just
that month alone and a hundred and fifty
thousand came as a result of a single
podcast episode if you subscribe to the
series you'll see exactly what that
episode is and how I structured that so
make sure you click the link below or
you subscribe to the series so I can
tell you more about that later the
podcast has directly affected my
relationship with my audience these are
in my office and these are handwritten
thank-you notes that people have sent me
in 99.9% of them mention the podcast
I've been blogging for years prior to
the podcast never got a handwritten note
but since starting the podcast I guess
everybody's right that connection with
your listener is unlike anything else
fans will show up these are different
meetups and different groups that have
come about as a result of starting the
podcast on the lower left hand corner
this is a church group that started a
curriculum based on the show and my
books on the lower right hand corner a
dad and his son wearing the ask Pat
podcast t-shirt together and these are
meetups that I can put together now
because people have heard my voice
trust me and we connect as a community
and it's just so great and fantastic
so no you do not need to be a
natural-born storyteller guess what you
need to do you just need to show up and
get started podcasting myth number two
you have to podcast in a big niche to
succeed this is a very common thing hey
I uh this is a very common thing for
brand-new podcasters to tell themselves
however you could actually benefit by
podcasting in a smaller space in a
smaller niche as I like to say the
riches are in the niches even though I
know niches is actually niches but hey I
wanted to rhyme so this is a student of
money when my courses power up
podcasting this is Phil Phil has a
podcast called a scanner school and this
is his show about little handheld radio
scanners like the ones where you listen
to police liens and emergency lines and
things like that and simply this was
just a hobby for him because he enjoyed
it and he wanted to connect with other
people in the space well here's a
Facebook post that he shared in our
Facebook group for this course and it's
pretty amazing what had happened since
he started his show he said I had to
come here to share it's a very funny
feeling to realize that you've created
superfans
I have listeners who follow me on
Facebook Twitter and now YouTube they
comment on every podcast and are there
for almost every Facebook live session
I'm doing and this was only after six
months and twenty four sessions released
you can build your tribe and that's
absolutely true so congrats to Phil and
everybody else in the small spaces who
are creating their authority building
podcast you can do it too podcasting
myth number three you have to have an
audience already this is another common
misconception that you have to have an
audience on a blog or on a YouTube
channel already well actually a lot of
people are using the podcast to build
their brands and to find that audience
here's an example another student of
mine Sofie Walker
she said guys I just hit 50,000
downloads for the new recruits stick at
it I started my podcast with no website
no business behind me and I currently
only have 51 people in my email list so
you don't need a large audience
now Sophie's podcast Australian birth
stories has blown up since then she's
reached the top of the charts in
Australia for kids and family she has
now millions of downloads and is
crushing it and
actually even now recommended by
different government agencies in
Australia to have them listen to her
show for continued education which is
just fantastic
podcasting myth number four you can't
make money until you get a big
listenership and that's kind of true if
you're only gonna stick with
sponsorships and advertising I have a
lot of other videos that talk about
podcast monetization I'll be talking
about it more here in this series and a
lot of my students have realized that
wow you don't need to start and it's
actually quite hard to start with
advertising and sponsorships there's
many different ways to generate an
income from your podcasts like selling
your own products being an affiliate for
other people's products selling people
tickets to events and many many more
another interesting thing is a lot of
advertisers now who are willing to pay
podcast hosts are realizing that well
it's not about the big numbers anymore
it's about the strength of the community
and the connection that a host is
building with their fans with their
listeners and there's a lot of money
that can be made if you have a podcast
and you have a very strong audience
quantity is not as important as quality
in this game and of course like a number
of my friend said you can have people
listening for a very long time you can
build an amazing relationship and it's
not about getting a big listenership
it's about getting a loyal following in
podcasting myth number five is that
podcasting is easy podcasting is not
easy but there's a huge opportunity
right in front of you right now so
before this video ends I want to share
with you just a couple more interesting
facts about where we are in podcasting
today and why you need to be jumping on
this train because it's still although
it may seem saturated we are still in
the very early days and I want to teach
you the right way to do it as you get
into this space so let me share some
interesting numbers with you now I just
want to ask you a simple question before
we get into this do you listen to
podcasts yes or no and whether your
answer is yes or no it's also important
to know who else is listening to
podcasts the truth is we are above half
the population in the u.s. listening to
podcasts right now now if you were to
ask a person hey do you listen to a
podcast even three years ago they answer
well what is a podcast now everybody
knows what a podcast is and half the
population is listening on a regular
basis but they're just not listening to
one show they're listening to several so
if you do listen to podcast consider how
many podcast you're actually subscribed
to because it's likely more than just
one on average people are screws on
average people are subscribed to seven
or more and I've even met people who
have over twenty thirty podcasts in
their subscription box and it's pretty
incredible I'm almost like well where do
you find time to do anything else but on
average people are subscribed to seven
podcasts and that's average some people
are subscribed to more twenty thirty so
when you consider getting into
podcasting and you might be wondering
well how do I or how might I compete
with other podcasters out there guess
what you don't have to compete with them
you can just compliment a person's
playlist and easily be found and become
a person's regular show now here's the
kicker when you're listening to podcasts
how long are you listening for and to
set this up I want to share the average
consumption time for other platforms
that you might be familiar with for blog
content people on average are reading
between five to ten minutes of course if
a post doesn't matter to somebody
they're gonna leave right away but of
course there's longer posts so this is
just an average but also consider that
people aren't actually reading every
single word that's why it's really
important to have a lot of sub headlines
so that people can easily use their eyes
to come down the page but it's not a
fully immersive experience like some of
these other platforms on YouTube I
understand that if you have about five
minutes of watch time or more guess what
you're doing really really well
isn't that crazy five minutes or more is
actually really really good that's
because on YouTube there's so many
distractions and other videos you can
click on and the attention span of
YouTube viewers is quite low on social
media obviously a post may only be seen
for a minute before it gets lost in a
person's feed and then it's gone forever
even though it's still there it doesn't
get a lot of longevity but with a
podcast people are listening to thirty
minutes one hour sometimes two hours
there's podcasts out there like the Joe
Rogan podcast where people are listening
to 2-3 hours of a show and guess what
they're listening to 90% plus of that
content the retention rate is ridiculous
and it's because like Leslie Samuel said
earlier it's because of where we listen
to podcasts we listen while on a commute
we listen while on a walk with our dog I
listen to podcasts while I do house
chores and wash the dishes where do you
listen to podcast I'm curious also
there's over 500 plus million blogs
that's a lot of blogs a half a billion
blogs in the world and blogging's been
around for a while of course so that's
not unexpected there are 31 plus million
active YouTube channels that post videos
and of course we all have heard the
statistics of you know hundreds of hours
of content being uploaded every minute
on YouTube it's kind of crazy there are
only less than a million podcasts we
haven't even hit 1 million podcast yet
so like I said we are still in the early
days of this medium and that's why the
opportunity is huge around 2017 podcasts
were being searched for more than blogs
this includes longtail keywords that
include the word blogs and podcasts just
just not these words alone but as you
can see there's a trend and blogs are
going down podcasts have been going up
and they still continue to go up despite
having less than 1 million shows out
there Google is now actively helping us
get more listeners which is amazing if
you type in any podcast into Google you
might find that you can actually play
the podcast directly from the search
result which is pretty incredible
even on Spotify now big players like
Spotify which have millions of listeners
are now promoting their podcast within
their platforms huge opportunities there
of course the Obamas they're making a
podcast for example so guess what people
who don't even know what podcasts are
going to learn about them people who
aren't subscribed to podcasts or not now
gonna come on to these platforms and
like you saw earlier people are
subscribed to more than one show so
they're gonna find us there and this is
what happened when the show serial came
out back in 2014 it was so popular I saw
my numbers in a business-related podcast
go up because people just started to
discover the platform that's why I
really love that celebrities are coming
and starting podcast because they're
inviting new listeners
onto the platforms so that we can get
them to and it's awesome seth godin an
amazing marketer and just proficient
leader in the space says podcasting is
the new blogging not as a way to make
big dollars blogging didn't do that
either
but as a way to share your ideas to lead
your community to earn trust podcasting
is a proven technology that is still in
its infancy it's an open mic a chance
for people with something to say to find
a few people or perhaps more than a few
people who'd like to hear them say it
and podcasting is the generous act of
showing up earning trust and authority
because you care enough to raise your
hand and speak up and that's the secret
you have to show up you have to actually
take action and so I hope that you
subscribe to the series so that we can
show you exactly how you can take action
and take the right steps moving forward
to not spend unnecessary amounts of
money on getting up and running and
making this happen for you but I know
what you're thinking you're likely
thinking nobody might listen to your
show or you might be thinking that
people are gonna hate your voice you
might also think that the technology is
a little bit scary or that maybe it's
gonna just be a waste of time or you
don't even have the time to do it these
are all normal excuses that my students
of my courses have had but guess what
most of these things are just myths and
they're scary in their myths because
it's the unknown and it's learning
something new like I remind you it's
these things in life that make us a
little bit nervous there are the big
bold steps that we need to take to move
forward to find results and I don't know
why exactly you want to create your show
but you do or else you wouldn't be here
watching this right now but the truth is
nothing is gonna happen until you take
action I'm excited because in the next
video in this three video series I'm
gonna actually give you the starting
tools the steps that you can use to
start actually materializing this show
in your head why you want to start your
podcast whether it's to build an
audience or to start selling more of the
products that you're creating or maybe
even just to spread a message and build
a community whatever it is I want to
help you do that I want to thank you for
being here so make sure you open that
email when the next video comes out
because we're gonna get started and make
things happen and make things easy for
you along the way too so between now and
then I just want you to think about
the listeners out there in this world
who are excited and ready to find you to
get to know you to listen to you and be
impacted by the message that you have to
share too you don't have to be an expert
but you do have to take action and I
hope that you'll take action and I want
to make it easy for you so look out for
that next video coming your way very
soon if not already available and just
good luck podcast has changed my life
and I can't wait for it to change yours
too
