WordPress Basics: Adding a new page

hello welcome to my basic series of
videos it's Alex here from WP eagle and
in this video what we're gonna be doing
is creating a page on our WordPress
website so without much more chitchat
let's get started on that okay so for
this site I've got a vanilla install of
WordPress on a little test site I've not
installed any plugins or any additional
themes I'm just using the standard
WordPress theme that you get when you
install and I'll be using this site for
all of these WordPress basics videos
okay so in this video we're gonna be
adding a page so let's do it now so to
do that we're gonna click on new up on
this toolbar I am already logged into
WordPress so often you'll need to login
as well if you're following along and
then I'm gonna click page you can also
do this when you're actually within the
backend under pages and add new just
there so the first box is the name of
the page so it might be services and
then this box is where you can insert
your your copy and obviously this could
be a mixture of images and text and
whatever and you've got these control
buttons along here which I will go into
more detail in another video there'll be
a video on adding images for example and
styling your text so I'm gonna go into
that too much now so what I'll do for
now is I'm just going to paste some
generic letting just to fill it out
obviously you can copy and paste your
copy in or if you just start typing away
now while we're on this page I'll just
take you through a few other little
things that you need to know about pages
so see this is the main edit screen area
this box here and then along the top
here you've got your permalink otherwise
known as a URL and that's obviously
going to be the address of the page that
we're creating so it's gonna be vanilla
WP eagle comm slash services you can
change that by clicking edit
they're down the right that's why we've
got some controls and these are quite
standard across press so whether you're
editing a page or a post you'll see
these so at the moment it's a draft if
we click publish that's gonna make this
page live then any time we make a change
we then need to click this Update button
over here and that also saves our
changes
as you go along WordPress will create
some revisions so you can go back in
time and restore old versions of pages
which is quite handy visibility is you
can set a password make it public or
make it private private means you have
to be logged into WordPress to be able
to see it obviously move to trash Chuck
seein trash is still not permanently
deleted you can still restore it from
the trash bin a bit like on a computer
now the page attributes allows us to set
a parent so say for example we had a
services page like this one then
underneath that we wanted to have some
pages for our different services they
would be a sub page of the services page
or the services page but another way
would be the parent it gives you a nice
kind of hierarchical hierarchical it's a
big word structure to your website so
yeah that's a parent then ordering is so
you probably don't need to worry about
you can't set a featured image here
which some themes may use in some places
but it's not often used on pages more on
blog posts so that's pages if you don't
see any of these things that I'm talking
about go up to the top and click screen
options and you can tick these boxes and
it gives you basically more edit screens
to for you to play with most of which
you probably not gonna need to worry
about okay I hope you found that video
useful before I go let's and let's just
look at this page that we've created and
review pages and there it is obviously
we now need to add things like a menu
navigation and things like that which
you'll find in the other videos in my
basics series which you can find on my
channel yeah good luck and I will see
you soon
