In this video I'm going to be talking
about WordPress themes.
I've been gettin' a few questions from you guys
where you get them from, how you install them,
and all that sort of stuff.
So this video is to answer some of those questions.
So, let's get started.
(dramatic music)
Hello, it's Alex here from WPEagle,
thanks for watching.
So WordPress themes, let's go through
some of the basics.
A WordPress theme basically gives your Wordpress
website its look and feel.
If WordPress was a car, and if you've seen
one of my previous videos you have seen
my analogy of the car before.
This is a DeLorean by the way.
But yeah, if WordPress was a car,
the theme would be the body and the interior
and the paint and everything that makes
it look nice, pretty, it would be
the dashboard as well and all that sort of stuff.
And WordPress itself would be
the engine powering the car.
So your theme is what you put on top
of your engine which is what's powering your website
to give it a nice look and feel,
set the colors, and the design,
the layout, and all that sort of stuff.
Now there are thousands of WordPress themes
to choose from.
Some are free and some cost a little bit of money.
We call the ones that cost a bit
of money premium WordPress themes.
And really depending upon your budget obviously
and whether you've got any money
is gonna determine what sort of theme you get.
Personally I always go for a premium WordPress theme.
I do this because the quality of the product
is generally a lot better.
The theme often has a lot more functions.
It looks better, it's easy to work with,
and you get access to support from the developers
if you get stuck.
I'm not saying that free themes
aren't worth checking out.
Yeah do give them a try and you may find
one that does the job for you.
It really depends on how complicated
your website is and the sort of functionality
and features that you need.
You may find that with a free theme,
but you might not, and if you don't
then that's when a premium theme comes in.
So where do you get these themes from?
Well if you're getting a free theme,
you can just simply go into
the backend of your WordPress website,
go into appearance and themes,
and you can then browse a whole library
of free themes that you can just install
with one click.
If you're after a premium theme
there are loads of places to look online for those.
One of my favorites is Theme Forest
which is a huge marketplace full
of lots of different WordPress themes
around lots of different things.
It's got reviews and all sorts of things
so that you can decide which theme
is best for you.
Of course there's more than Theme Forest,
just go to Google and do a quick search
for WordPress premium themes
and you will find a whole host of different websites
offering some great themes.
So once you've chosen your theme,
how do you install it?
Well it's quite simple.
If you've purchased the premium theme,
you'll be given a download link
where you can download a zip file.
You download that to your computer.
You generally need to extract it
because within there you'll find another zip file
which is the installable bit
or bit of the theme.
And then you simply go into your WordPress dashboard
again into appearance and themes,
and you'll see an add new button.
Give that a click and then you can upload
the zip file into your website
and click activate and there's your theme installed.
If you got a free theme and you got
it through the WordPress directory type place
within your backend then you can install that
just by clicking the button,
it's very straight forward.
So once your theme's installed
your probably gonna want to customize it
and this is gonna be different depending
on the theme that you went for.
Now if you went for a decent theme,
hopefully when you've installed the theme,
you'll find that there is a whole load
of options, kind of customization panel,
which you can use to you know set your fonts,
change your colors, add your logo,
and build up pages.
So this is really where you spot
the difference between free and premium themes
in terms of what you get in the backend
in terms of customization options
and whether it's easy to build up pages
and all that sort of stuff.
For example, if you look at the incredible xtheme
you'll see that it's got a fantastic visual editor
so you can drag and drop elements
onto a page to build stuff,
it's got load and loads of customization options
so you can really make the site your own.
And you only get this kind of level
and depth of customization features
in a premium theme I'm afraid.
I've yet to see a free theme that
gives you this sort of sophistication
when it comes to working on your website.
So that brings me to the end of this video
all about themes.
I hope I answered a few of your questions.
