is a widget on wordpress I got asked
of my channel of these very videos

what's a widget I would like to know and
can you explain it so I'm going to
attempt to do that right now so if you
have a look at this website that I've
got open now it's the latest demo site
that I made recently if you want to make
a site like this yourself you can do
just take a look at the video which I'll
put up on the screen now and you can
ever click and have a look and if we
look at this page down the right-hand
side you'll notice that there's this
sidebar and showing off some of the
other videos but as I scroll down it's
got comments and posts and archives and
it basically can have whatever you want
and a sidebar is made up of widgets now
this is a widget and this is a widget
and this is widget and you can get
widgets for all sorts of different
things forms the search box is a widget
they're all widgets and basically
they're just widget is just something
that you can put on to your sidebar
within WordPress now to do that you
obviously need to login so I'll just log
into this site now and you'll find it
under appearance come on I'm quicker
than the computer here we go appearance
then widgets funnily enough and here we
are and now you can have as many
different side bars as you want this
theme has got a primary sidebar that
it's got widget areas for the header and
the footer other they're not strictly on
the side thereof see in the header and
footer but they're still called sidebars
really or you could go to a widget area
as well I suppose a lot of themes allow
you to create many different sidebars
and then you can apply them to different
pages so if we look at the
the primary one which is the one that we
were just looking at and if I'm just
going to open up the site in another tab
so we can we can compare and contrast
between the front and the back we're
going to blog because that's got em plot
the sidebar so we see it taught me a lot
search and works let me see here we've
got searching work so if I was to move
these around so today I wanted to put my
recent works to the bottom these widgets
you can configure them so I click on
this little arrow I could change the
template I sure that do okay for to
third I could hide certain things so
untied to date the author comments
summary the categories of tags you get
the idea and obviously this is going to
depend on whichever widget you're using
but I've dragged that to the top to the
bottom the search at the top I could put
me my categories the top so now if we go
back to the blog and refresh we've now
got our categories at the top and the
search if we scroll down to where the
recent works widget and it's placed you
can see that now these look a bit better
and I've got rid of all that other text
and we're just showing the featured
image and the title so that was quite a
quick short and sweet video I hope that
makes sense so yeah a widget is
basically something you put in a widget
area usually a sidebar down the side of
the page but can be across the top and
across the bottom or elsewhere and
WordPress comes with a whole load of
built-in widgets for you know links and
recent posts and comments and search and
just bit of text if you want use a bit
of text and but often themes and plugins
will add extra widgets that you can use
you know compatible for example if you
install the mailchimp plugin it will
give you your widgets that you can put a
forum to collect email addresses into
widget area I hope that answer the
