hey everyone this is stefan jamison
project life mastery and I'm here right
now with my good friend Greg Mercer who
is the founder of jungle scout many of
you guys might know that jungle Scout is
a software that provides a suite of
tools for Amazon sellers I've done some
previous videos with Greg where we
talked about product research and went
into some of the really great features
that jungle Scout provides but today we
want to focus on finding suppliers and
manufacturers for an Amazon product that
you could sell so Greg thanks for taking
the time man thanks lot for having me
back it's always a blast chatter with
people a little bit about the process of
finding a supplier manufacturer and how
someone can essentially use that as a
model to launch can sell a product on
Amazon yes remember when I first started
selling on Amazon I was selling other
people's products so I was purchasing
them from brands and what I quickly
found is the margins were much better on
products that I was essentially ordering
directly from the factory so you know
what I was doing is I was ordering these
directly from the factory I was putting
my brand or my private label on them and
then I was selling his products
primarily through Amazon and the benefit
of that is it's factory direct like
you're getting it from the best price
it's like straight from the source so
there's less markup and as a result you
can get better margins you can have more
control over the products to make
changes you're building your own brand
and a number of other things that are
really beneficial from getting it
directly from the factory yeah and a lot
of people don't realize that you can do
that because they think well I have to
invent a product after you know make it
myself you know make it my garage or
find someone you know it's gonna make it
from scratch where you know this model
is so great because you're finding
manufacturers are already making that
product right and you're doing your
research on amazon of course to make
sure that it's selling well successfully
using jungle scale can help you with
that and you know seeing the you know
competitors and and the profit margins
or your figuring all that out and then
you find the supplier and a lot of
people you know they go to Alibaba or
they're finding you know in China and
places like that because it's a lot
cheaper so it's a amazing model that
makes it really simple and and you guys
have some great tools that help people
with that do you mind just kind of
sharing a little bit more I guess about
that process of let's say someone has a
product that they might have an idea for
they've done some research you know
where would they go like when they go to
Google Alibaba like what are the steps
with
process of how they could find a
supplier yeah I remember when I looked
for my first supplier is a pretty scary
thing yeah I was like man I'm definitely
talked to a factory before they're
probably gonna realize I don't know what
I'm talking about it was pretty
intimidating right and what you quickly
find is that there one very used to
working with people who don't have like
a lot of experience so you don't need to
be intimidated you know you can reach
out to them you're talking to sales reps
so they're always gonna be really
friendly and they're trying to make a
sale so they'll like walk you through
the little parts that you don't really
know very well but up until about a year
ago the way I was finding all my
factories is by using online
marketplaces like Alibaba so a lot of
you watching this right now are probably
familiar with Alibaba but it's an online
marketplace where these factories and
suppliers and trade agents are listing
the products that they create they're
primarily in China and then you can go
in there and you can find these and
search through them and find a factor
that makes goods either the exact goods
that you want or something pretty
similar to the goods that you would like
to sell so this is how is finding my
factories up until about a year ago and
I'll give you like the pros and cons of
one of these online marketplaces like
Alibaba you know the pros are there's
tons of supply there's like you know one
of the products I sell use bamboo
marshmallow sticks and if you go on
Alibaba and search like bamboo
marshmallow sticks you'll quickly see
that there's like hundreds of factories
that are willing to make these for you
right it's like tons of supply but then
where I would get frustrated I would
contact a whole bunch of them I'm kind
of act like 50 of them only like 10 of
them wouldn't even respond and out of
those 10 that would respond like half of
them were like oh yeah here's our spec
sheet for like chopsticks I'm like I'm
trying to get like these bamboo
marshmallow SIG's like so they like
didn't even respond with anything that
was relevant
a lot of them were like very poor
communicators so like weren't answering
my questions or there was maybe just too
strong of a language barrier and then I
would find like one or two that like
seemed pretty good okay so now like I
contacted a whole bunch of factories
I've spent a lot of time going back and
forth with all these different factories
I've narrowed it down to one two or
three good ones and then I would ask for
samples so these samples would arrive
and this is essentially how is vetting
the quality of these different factories
now just think if you're a factory and
you're setting someone a sample
and you're trying to make a really good
impression on because you obviously want
their business this is gonna be like the
best sample you have right this is the
course of you like the best person to
make this they're gonna give it some
extra love package it up a little bit
nicer it's like you know you can use a
sample to gauge like the overall kind of
quality but you have to remember the
grain of salt right because they're
obviously going to give you the best one
so this is how I always work with
factory this is how I used to always
find factories and what would happen is
the quality of the actual production
runs would oftentimes vary so sometimes
would be just like the sample other
times it wouldn't and this was like the
this is like the biggest problem with
Alibaba is that like there is all these
factories on there but it's really hard
to vet the quality because there's you
know they have some stuff on there to
like make sure that they have like a
business license and things like that
but there's not like a great way to
really gauge like how legitimate these
factories are and how well they can
actually make an entire production run
so that was like frustrating I had you
know mostly good experiences but enough
kind of bad experiences that it I would
still always worry about it and you know
I would lose significant amount of money
through bad experiences so that's when I
was like alright there has to be a
better way to do this yeah so I guess
you know some people might be concerned
I guess that they're gonna order a
certain amount of inventory
how'd it how to make sure that you know
they're not risking their money and
potentially getting a bad batch or the
supplier doesn't deliver it properly so
what would you I guess do to make sure
that the supplier is legitimate and you
know you have a I guess a great
relationship with them yeah so now how I
do it well for one a simple thing you
can do is an inspection so before they
ship the goods from their factory
overseas to wherever you're located in
the world you have a third party to do
an inspection and this reduces a lot of
the risk however if they find any major
mistakes it's usually kind of tough to
get the factory to fix that because
they're like I've already made a
thousand of these like we don't want to
unpack all of these and repaint them
from red to blue or what
you know so it's like it is like a level
of assurance but just know it's after
they find the problems it's still gonna
be like a little bit of a headache
trying to get the factory to fix this so
what we do now is I found out about this
trade data okay so how this works is
when you import something into the US
you know you or your freight forwarder
you fill out a bunch of paperwork this
gets submitted and it goes to a number
of different government agencies and
this is how they determine things like
tariffs or customs or border security or
whatever else and then there's this law
in the u.s. called the Freedom of
Information Act through this law you can
get government data and documents so
this is pretty cool because we can get
access to all these import records for
everything that gets imported into the
u.s. so you can probably sense where I'm
going with this but now the sudden you
know who's pretty much anyone's factory
is so with this data we can do things
like determine how often factories
import into the u.s. how long they've
been importing into the US who their
customers are and a bunch of other just
really valuable information to now
better vet the factories so now using
this data is how I nowadays go about
finding the best factory for my product
it's amazing I know you guys have the
supplier database part of jungle scale
that helps them do that so do you mind I
know we'll do a demo in this video well
great we'll walk you through the
software but you mind just kind of
explaining how that works do they I
guess put in their competitors product
or a keyword and it just kind of gives
them that information yeah great
question so you know so we've downloaded
all this data into jungle Scouts tool
called the supplier database so if you
want you can actually get this directly
from the government they'll send it to
you in about 300 cd-roms oh you have to
download it onto your computer and it's
actually quite expensive the Freedom of
Information Act a little bit of a
misrepresentation but anyway so we've
done that we've downloaded all this data
into our database and there's or I have
two favorite ways to search through it
one is you just search by the product
and you just see who the top factories
are for that particular product and the
product
names listed in the Bill of Lading
description so that's how you can do it
and this works pretty well especially if
you're trying to find factories outside
of China because you can filter and be
like okay only showed me factories
outside of China and then you can avoid
a lot of these new tariffs that are
happening right now so that's one good
way to do it my favorite way to do it
though is actually to search by the
brand name for the top-rated product on
Amazon so let's pretend modern day I'm
gonna go back I'm trying to find a new
factory for my marshmallow sticks
instead of contacting a hundred
suppliers on Alibaba I'm just gonna go
to Amazon see who has the best rating so
I don't really care like how much they
sell or whatever else like if they've
like five hundred five-star reviews that
I know they have a quality Factory
because like you can't get 505 started
use of it with like a crap product so I
just plug them in there and you
literally can just see who their
factories so now the sudden instead of
trying to contact all these different
factories to find the best one I already
know there's gonna be a quality fact you
already know they make a quality product
and now I can just contact them directly
so it's really powerful thing to do and
you'll be amazed once you start
searching through this data it's like
wow this is who makes Patagonia's
backpacks this is who makes I'm like
Louis Vuitton's products this is who
makes oakley's sunglasses and you see
like who all these factories are and
it's like wow like you can just
piggyback off of all of the research I'm
sure they've already done to find the
top quality factory that's incredibly
powerful hopefully you guys are getting
the power of that so I know you know you
were gonna show a demo I think actually
showing it is more powerful for you guys
to see how you can use this but if
there's someone that's looking to get
started finding a supplier it can be
challenging you know and it definitely
when you find based on what great
sharing with you guys you know you can
find the ones that are already credible
from your competitors then it saves you
that time and can give you that extra
level of assurance so we're gonna
transition now to great walking us
through how this works inside of jungle
Scout over on the left hand side you'll
find the find suppliers tab inside of
there is the supplier database in the
supplier database there's three
different ways to search through it one
is by product two is by company or
whatever entity is imported
the goods into the u.s. three is
supplier supplier is whatever entity is
exporting the goods from China or any
other country all around the world so to
start we'll search by product for this
example I'll use the term backpacks what
this is doing is its searching for this
term backpacks inside of the Bill of
Lading shipment description so I see
right here that in that shipment
description its backpacks so let's take
a little bit of a deeper look at what
we're seeing on this particular page
inside of each one of these cards
represents one Factory this is the
factory's address as particular one is
in Vietnam and these are all their
customers that they're importing goods
to into the u.s. in the past five years
they've had 73 shipments and they have a
total of five different customers and
over here on the right hand side we can
see how those goods were classified and
more specifically what HTS code they had
to be classified as such when you expand
you can see how many shipments they had
each respective month and then down here
it has a list of all their customers
that just the shipment description as
well as some other information like the
weight of the shipment and the quantity
inside of the shipment quickly scrolling
through here I can see that there are a
number of big companies that are
recommend that I recognize like Osprey
as well as other companies like Trek or
Cabela's or Columbia or Mountain
Equipment so this is really cool it's
really powerful because I can see what
factories all these different big brands
and big companies all around the world
are using so a very powerful thing next
let's try a company search now ideally
you have the name of the legal entity
but you don't necessarily need to so
let's go on Amazon let's find a product
that's getting good reviews so therefore
we know they must have a quality factory
and let's see if we can find out who
their Factory is one of the products
that I sell are hooded baby towels and
let's just take a look at those
so this one right here it's usually the
top result they have over 1300 reviews
and four and a half stars so I know they
have a pretty good factory so let's go
in here
let's find the name of their brand and
search that now like I said ideal you
have the legal entity name however we've
built a really cool algorithm that
actually helps link up the brand name
with a company that owns it so when I
click search I see this little tool tip
that says Hudson baby is a brand and
likely owned by baby vision okay so I
can click on baby vision and then I'll
search for that and now I see right here
that this is baby vision and these are
their different suppliers so I can view
more to view each individual shipment
and I can go through here I can read the
shipment description and find out which
one of these factories is the one that's
actually making their hooded baby towels
as you can imagine this is really
powerful because now instead of going to
a website like Alibaba and sorting
through all those different factories
trying to find one of quality instead
you can just find out who these other
companies are using for their factories
and you already know the quality you
already know that the company is
legitimate because you can read the
reviews on Amazon so it's a very very
powerful feature
lastly you can search by supplier so
let's pretend you did already find a
factory on Alibaba I'll do the same
thing just hooded baby towels let's go
ahead and just grab one of these
factories so right here looks fine
I'm going to grab the name of this
factory and I'm going to paste it into
paste it right into our supplier search
go ahead and click search and I can
quickly see that this is the factory I
can see who their customers are and I
can scroll down and I can look at how
many shipments they've made into the US
so it looks like this particular Factory
it hasn't actually shipped anything into
the US since March of 2017 which to me
would be a little bit of a red flag I
don't want to dive in deeper and see why
it is that it's been over two years
since they've shipped anything into the
US other than that I don't really see
any red flags I see that they make
different bamboo material textiles which
makes sense because my hundred baby
tiles are made out of bamboo fabric so
all that checks out but then I probably
want to go in here I would want to see
who their customers are what kind of
reviews their customers get and use that
data to help me decide whether or not
they're a high-quality factory that can
be trustworthy or not so that's the gist
of it it's a lot of fun to play around
with there's some other functionality
that I haven't gone into like for
example if you're looking for only for
factories outside of China what you can
do is you can make a search you can
remove China as one of the countries and
then it will filter based off of that
criteria so this is a very very powerful
way to find new suppliers or factories
for your product gone are the days of
searching through all those different
factories on Alibaba trying to vet them
instead you can do something as easily
as just find the top-rated product on
Amazon and find out who their factories
so I hope you enjoy bye alright
hopefully you guys enjoyed that thank
you so much Greg for walking people
through how that works just final
question for you is you know anything
else people should look for
aware of when reaching out to suppliers
you know obviously getting the samples
but what kind of questions should they
ask suppliers before they determine
whether or not they should go with them
or not yeah I think the most important
thing here is just to make sure you can
ask like all your questions up front and
like everything's kind of already
decided on up front from packaging to
delivery deadlines to who pays for a
second inspection if you failed the
first one just really anything you can
think of around that it's really good to
clear that up upfront so you're not left
in like an awkward spot where like
you're trying to kind of negotiate this
after the fact so just all those types
of questions up front through your
communications before you put down that
initial deposit they'll remove a lot of
the potential headaches that you could
have after it awesome and then I guess
what about negotiating and obviously
that kind of depends on how much that
you're ordering with them but any tips
around that or how someone should
approach that yeah so we can probably do
a whole nother video just on
negotiations and I don't know if I'm
actually the best person negotiations be
like the lowest hanging fruit that I've
found like if you only take away one
thing from this it's that if you have
like two good like pretty legitimate
factories just right away it's going to
make your negotiations easier because
you know that like you can push pretty
hard and if one pretty much says like no
there's no chance we can do it for that
it's like you know you always kind of
have a backup so just really having like
it just finding two good factories and
then trying to push each of them as hard
as you can trying to say okay they can
do it for this price can you do it for a
little bit lower that really just helps
a lot with the process and just know
that you know everything's up for
negotiation from the timelines to the
price to the when you have to pay and
how much you have to pay so instead of
you know thirty percent up front and
seventy percent at the end maybe you
know only ten percent up front and
ninety percent when it actually arrives
important those those types of terms can
get better the longer you have a
relationship with a factory but just
know that all those different things are
up for negotiation so don't be hesitant
to ask about those different areas love
it well if you guys want to check out
again the supplier database click the
link below Greg actually graciously gave
a special discount for you guys
being a follower of project life mastery
so the link below is for that as well as
the other links that we have two other
interviews and videos that we did
together but I highly recommend jungle
scout myself Tatiana we both use it
pretty much all the people we work with
in coach to help them build their Amazon
business also use jungle Scout as well
so could not recommend it enough Greg
thank you so much for taking the time
man thanks for having me on thank you
guys for staying until the end thank you
guys see you in the next video
