He Makes $50k/Month On Amazon Doing The OPPOSITE Of Everyone Else!

hey everyone this is Stefan James from
Project life mastery and I'm here right
now at seller con in Las Vegas which is
the number one event for Amazon sellers
is hosted by the amazing selling machine
and I'm sitting down right now with
Alberto who is from Mexico but lives now
in Seattle Washington and he joined a
meze and selling machine he actually
originally found out about you know
selling on Amazon an FBA from an
interview that I did with Tatiana that
went viral many of you might have
watched that video
joining me is in cell machine you're
doing 50,000 a month in sales
you got a pretty inspirational story so
we're gonna share that a little bit with
you guys here today but I just want to
say thank you for taking the time thank
you so fun thank you for coming here and
yeah a little bit of myself you know I
grew up in Mexico so I went to you know
from when I was born to college all in
Mexico I study electrical engineer and
then I found a way basically through
basically I started doing computer
programming and through that
professional I got a job in Sierra Lima
croissant yeah so I was able you know to
move to United States you know get my
work piece and later my green card and
after I you know I was always very
passionate about like businesses I
always tried to start you know but it
was always a concern of capital or maybe
like experience and contacts but once I
was dead he said you know I'll give it a
try you know and I tried different
businesses at some point you know was
you know I was getting out of another
business which was not working very well
and and I saw a video of a Stephanie
with the Tianna like it 2017 basically
how they no he said the kicker he's only
online company and how he like several
to mentor that yen and she was able to
grow up you know like to you know 1850
care like more fut talented time yeah
every time so I would say like is very
interesting and then a key part that I
actually like because I was trying to
Greek commerce you know when I was back
in Mexico and through eBay and I didn't
know that
you know amazon has the FDA basically
option that you can actually like
leverage their fulfillment center
customer sent area which I take a lot of
I mean all the work back from your
shoulders and so I got interested okay
you know they solved that that problem
you know for for the small seller so you
know I you know I start doing some
basically like I watch more videos I
mean you recommended basically asme you
actually want to get you know you know
like a for courses that explains you
know every step of the process so I so I
basically like I put from my previous
company I put like a small team I
borrowed this a small team together to
basically start all of us kinda watching
ASM at the same time I could go enter
animals and you know so basically like
one was like kind of responsible for
like everybody was possible asset for
finding products and then we start like
dividing the task in like okay like
because I still forget my full-time job
basically at Microsoft to fund this
business so I got help to get like
especially like you know logistics and
then and then getting that you know like
copywriting
yeah right so all the pictures all day
you know I mean you don't have time to
do everything right yourself well
especially by you know having a
full-time job
yeah very demanding job so but you know
I was I was I did a lot of
experimentation at the beginning you
know I tried to use the SaaS and kind of
parameters yeah crazy yeah I first
launched a very very simple product
ously was a keychain organizer basically
like a few months later I see like a
competition kinda like came you know
like and it was you know very aggressive
but I it was my first you know like I
did my first attempt to actually try
everything and I must not learn about
the platform how to sell a product you
know doing some video of marketing so
the first product you just was to learn
a lot of things even though it's
competitive but I just looked at as an
opportunity
yeah exactly I was you know it was my
first first time actually well it's my
second time sourcing from from China you
know but but you know like in sending to
the Amazon warehouse I mean I tried to
follow everything you know and I pick up
Rosa western like lightweight and and
actually like a small you know like yeah
obviously the order like among was not
like too high and to experiment so my my
I think my you know that at that point I
was actually wanted to you know like
Experian to see how much you know that
product can make on the market and then
if if that was exercise you know
replicate a functional products so I
took that probably know a so-so Brazil a
package through air shipping you know
through my home my cereal I inspected
Italy and then I and then I send it to
to Amazon right and and I started like
you know doing like so summer you know
like Facebook advertising I start
playing we like you know I was some
pay-per-click you know like I start
getting some sales but I not associated
I couldn't have a break-even you know
with the marketing was more expensive
and actually that is the profit margin
just too small for that product or
profit margin I mean was I mean it was
like a four dollar product Leslie in
clean shipping and I was trying to sell
it at like sixteen dollars eventually I
had to kind of like I mean like
competition
a lot Commission came you know at lunch
like so so the profit modeling was there
but I mean it was only obviously in
Amazon the the top I would say that the
the the top three may be on the first
page make most of the sales so at that
point I was not yet too aggressive all
on the marketing and didn't know like I
didn't want to spend a lot of money you
know like yet I mean so I was still
still learning and you know so then I
said you know what I'm gonna try to also
another thing that I didn't think about
that time you know was like my audience
so I tried you know I pick up a good
product that was has the you know like
the parameters I mean like BSR you know
like point not my competition but the
criteria was secured it wasn't the
beginning I going to like advertises
product to write and then so I so that's
why this my marketing was very expensive
because and it was basically it's a
challenging product to market right
because there's some products are easier
to market than others but this one you
just had to really maybe spend a lot of
money to sell it I guess exactly yeah
so I so I went and try a few other plugs
in so I find you know pets
that means was kinda like it was a lot
of I was profitable Vasili or was a lot
of like you know growth in that niche so
I try pet products with something that
actually like you know in my family we
have a lot of pets as I okay my
something like even we can take pictures
we can have we have you know cats we
have both dogs you know we can actually
like even we have the models there so we
try that and actually the probability
that that one can I sell better but we
had a lot of returns because the Prada
you had to assemble and put together
right so so I said look so it we try you
know home basically product so and as I
tested over like six six to eight months
you know like you know like like four or
five different products and I guess two
or three of them I mean at some point
we're doing good good
then you know like for different reasons
you know they like you know maybe a bad
pro review they slow down or or maybe
competition came too aggressive so I
guess I keep trying to find you know
like a good product right and so I find
a niche that I I like you know basically
and that is pointed more towards the
elderly population so and I so I found
you know like oh and this you know your
shirt's me a little bit yeah it's
amazing first of all a few comments I
have was first of all it's amazing that
you know you watch the video on YouTube
and took action with it so I admire you
so much for that because I know so many
people you know on YouTube unfortunately
they watch and they inspire but they
don't take action so congratulations for
that but also just I'm fascinated by
your mindset because you know you've
tried a few different products and you
know a few of them didn't succeed and
I'd love to hear what was the the
mindset you had during that time because
I know a lot of people are so afraid of
trying and launching a product what if
it doesn't sell what if it doesn't work
out so what was that did you have a
certain mindset or companies to help you
with that
yeah of course I mean our business you
know I was got them I said that most
likely you were going to fail and but
also like you like test more and try
more you know maybe like let's say I
mean your potential success is like 10
percent of you know like so maybe one
out of ten or two out of ten you know
will likely I mean will succeed so I
said like you know I just want to try
you know maybe like 10 different
products right I mean and I got to be
obviously a bit proud that I tried you
know I try I will try to improve from
the previous like experience but I was
it was it gets really expensive to do
that though did you find products you
can low minimum order quantity so you
can try to test them yeah actually I was
always trying to negotiate can i minimum
order quantity to be the lowest possible
right a few pros and I mean it's I mean
it's difficult because maybe they had to
you know like maybe the minimum
sometimes like 500 pieces I mean
sometimes you cannot get around that but
every time that I could you know I I
even like I say even you know like 100
pieces or less than that and just to be
able to get it into you know to Amazon
and try it out and I say okay if you if
you're successful then I mean just going
to like busy or that I I mean larger
order but I mean at least I wanted to
actually like you know tested with I the
smallest possible investment yeah yeah
it wasn't a big risk it was if you
that wasn't that big of a move on to the
next one and try it so yeah that's great
now I know the product that you've had
the most success with it's very
different than a lot of other products
it's a very high ticket product you
mention you sell it for $2,000 on Amazon
you know the minimum order quantity I
think you said was 10 units was the
minimum and I think a $1000 per minute
so about $10,000 is your minimum order
but that product you know I'd love to
hear this kind of how you came across
this product yes and yeah just kind of
what that story what that journey has
been like yeah that one
yeah now you basically have to take you
know from a training course or advice
you know maybe some some things you know
like you can apply directly but some
things actually you have to do exactly
the opposite because everybody is doing
the same thing so I said like you know I
watch a kill another video from you and
unlock which talked about like height
ticket selling you know how actually
like it's easier to actually you know
sell a few units for like or a few
services or a few like for a larger
amount but sit with a high-value and I
mean just it's less work I mean less and
you have less headaches you know ya
don't need as many customers many
customers make life exactly so I said
okay why wasn't applied I mean that uh
that principle to Amazon right so I
started what I did is exhorted you know
buy the most expensive product to the
least expensive so I was trying to see
like you know I pass all the
collectibles and all those and then I
found a product that actually I mean I
was I actually I was familiar with those
products and I was just hoping I mean I
can agree from manufacturer because
obviously I mean if it is that doesn't
mean that you can actually get it I mean
maybe they have private contact or
something but I was able to actually
find the supplier and they were actually
in China yeah yeah yeah so so yeah true
trolly Baba I found the product they
were not able to provide me like the
trader students and I always do like
trader students I was a little bit
skeptic but by that point and because I
already try with different supplies I
already have one of my suppose that well
my my purchasing agent so k1 and
actually expect the factory check out
the product because you know it's an
expensive product and give me the I mean
he basically like said that you know the
factory is actually it's a good company
and I give me okay so I did at
restaurants through him and he actually
purchase the so so with this product
I could imagine it's a really high
ticket product was there I guess a lot
of competition like how were you able to
do the research and to know it would
sell yeah yeah actually I use I used the
tool jungle scout and at that point I
noticed I mean in this product at least
there was there was at the time no no
one doing fe a or for this canoe so ice
and then I mean basically like the was
less than one page of products really so
I said okay there is low competition so
and then the comparison not taking
advantage of the like I'm a solid mama
selling features yeah they don't know
what they're doing as much the
competitors yeah eventually people you
know they catch up but I mean like
initially I saw like okay this is an
opportunity that no one is actually like
leveraging everything from Amazon so I
said like okay I'm going to bet on this
product even though it's outside of the
parameters that ASM kind of recommends
and so it's like I I tried out I mean
and I can tell you like my first spin
actually I had like some systematic
defect actually like my first the first
10 pieces it was a very simple layer
actually was a once I actually start
getting the field from the customers I
was it was something easy to fix but I
mean obviously the first reaction is
that you start selling can you actually
start selling organically I think had to
even put like advertising only maybe
like PPC yeah but not not anything I
didn't have to do a Facebook or anything
so just because the the market was still
kinda like you know
so you mentioned it's a it's something
you suffered older like what's the
demographic like you people that retired
or what age group is this product for
yeah exactly smoothly people that
retired I mean like like I don't the
elderly you know like yech 66 years and
above yeah awesome and I'd love to hear
what was I guess what were some of the
challenges the biggest challenges that
you faced along the way yeah well first
I mean it's like I guess like bunch of
failures and you had to actually you
know keep a positive I said I mean that
I mean it's it's part of the process I
mean and and you know just just try to
find you know you know learn from the
mistakes I mean like I guess there's
some frustration along the way you know
because you're like investing and you
know like you're not making your dollars
back but I mean it's I I think I still I
mean I I mean I knew okay I will give it
a try you know for X amount of time and
make
as someone of products I mean I'm going
to give up like - so did you know that
you could you know sell back off your
inventory utilities recoup actor
investment were you able to do that with
some of those products yeah like with
the first process I mean I mean it was
not none of them it was possible with
the with this product I mean the last
one even though because it was there was
a good margin basically so I knew even
though even if I discount the basically
I would still will sell at a with a
profit margin right because I prefer me
was was higher than the other products
or at least I mean it was probably that
basically I it's a kind of basic neat
product for fully a little depopulation
that so so even I mean they would and
there is not like a lot of people
selling so so it's hard hard to access
area got it
why this I love your mindset you know
one quote that I love is that success is
going from failure to failure to failure
to failure without losing enthusiasm
along the way yeah you got to it you
just have to keep learning on what I
mean what you fail I mean then for I
mean the mimics like the same mistake
for the next iteration learning from
each failure so wasn't failure is now
less than an asset exactly I mean I can
tell for example like there was a time
you know when we I calculated
incorrectly the because I mean I
calculated I mentioned the product so
the shipping for example the shipping
cost but they're not even consider like
dimensional weight for example and then
when actually came to Amazon they
calculated the so they said instead of
like five dollars it was like ten
dollars and say okay I'm not going to be
profitable
so those mistakes that you actually like
okay I guess and then all these text in
about like you know not knowing my
audience beforehand or so I mean for the
next one cell okay now I need to
consider the audience and in shipping
cost and so I found a product that
actually like okay try to they they the
least amount of shipping you know
knowing my heart and saying everything
you know
I mean learning from that from the
previous mistakes twice yeah and you
know I you know having a full-time job
at Microsoft how were you able to spend
the time on this business was just
evening time after work weekends like
what how did you structure and at your
time yeah it's kind of a big challenge
right because I mean initially yeah I
was doing mostly evening's and weekends
and I mean at some point I mean you ever
had to I mean you do like early mornings
I mean a good thing is I mean he'll my
schedule is flexible so I try to come
early I mean maybe
just in the mornings to have a little
time to actually send directions to my
team and then maybe take a few phone
calls and during lunch time and in the
evening you know talking to my supplier
in China right right so yeah I mean
sometimes I mean some days are long
right and I mean I had to put maybe one
full day on the weekend yeah and
obviously I've had to take you know one
day off for me you know - and then go to
the gym and work because obviously I
mean I mean you have the stress of like
what both things I mean just basically
to be able to you know to relieve some
stress I mean do something else like
clear your mind and you know re-energize
and yeah totally you know one thing one
comment you made to you that I want to
mention too is that you know you looked
at the course the course you know
courses I'll give you a criteria that
they want to help you - it's more like a
guideline it's not a rule but it's for
those that are starting you want to
typically follow a criteria it just it's
gonna help you have the highest chance
of success but the criteria is more it's
more there as okay this is what we
recommend but when you're more advanced
yes you can actually break the rules the
criteria you can go after higher ticket
products you can go after you know they
don't typically recommend products that
are heavy or big but you could still
succeed with it I yes I interviewed
someone the other day selling kitchen
cabinets very big heavy products but
built it to forty million dollar
business right and so you know obviously
you can succeed with that so I like the
minds that you had is you thought it
would side the box yeah not just how
everyone else thinks but you are opening
yourself up to look for other
opportunities and I guess you had
learned a lot of valuable lessons now at
this point that you're able to have some
experience to know that this would work
before you got into that yes that's
correct
yeah I mean sometimes I mean like I
think ASM is designed to launch your
first product and actually follow you
and I guess as much as possible for the
first plug and you get experience I mean
I guess you don't have you don't need to
risk a lot of money I mean for the first
experiments because I mean you're
learning you're learning that the
platform you're learning the process but
I mean yeah like maybe later you find a
pro that is more on you on your
expertise even though maybe it gets a
little bit also the criteria but maybe
you can work it out with some of your
strengths yeah totally yeah and just for
those that are watching ASM is amazing
selling machine which is an online
course that teaches step by step how to
sell on Amazon so we'll link ensure that
for you guys below
any advice I guess you'd have for
someone that might be watching this that
is you know position that you are in
maybe a year or two ago where you're
watching the videos you're considering
the start to build a business like this
any advice it might give this someone
like that and it's may be on the fence
or maybe thinking about it or not sure
if it's you know the right fit for them
yeah I mean it's a I mean you I mean
it's a it's a great business for tuning
time and there is still you know like if
obviously there is more competition I
mean because I mean the platform you
know it's I mean it's more people are
coming but I mean you still I mean it's
you still a lot of areas that are on top
and if you basically like want to it's a
it's a I think is the best best channel
that iPhone for example Amazon to
actually try out like you know to get a
product out there because for example I
say you want to actually do that but to
Costco or other like I mean it's is
it'll take a long time actually to so I
would say this it's a low bar here and
three Vasiliy so you want to like
experiment basically I mean it's it's
like I have so there are that's why
people that obviously they for example a
Mac user I'm an immigrant
you know they there is sometimes I mean
things like in you have connections in
your countries or some plugs that are
maybe specifically manufactured ever see
that you have a connections with like
that you can actually maybe like bring
to the United States and it's the
basically not you're able to find
anywhere else right so it's a good way I
mean to let's say I mean if you like
person for me that have lived in
different countries you can find you
know like maybe the customers here and
you can find maybe like this the
manufacturers in your own country that's
you know one way basically that and you
know absolutely you know like other
thing is for simple I say you have a
good-paying job for example sometimes I
mean it's like in at least in the tech
industry I mean then there is a wait
together for example some help like
funding even like from like coworkers
are silly so you need like the funding
we see like to scale I mean that I mean
get connections to see like your so the
basically like don't I mean try to pick
up good relationship you know with
everybody because that's maybe later I
mean that's your same friends I see that
you work with the city they will be
excited with supportive of you I would
say not everybody you know like jumps in
and actually wants to put a war because
maybe they have busy lives they have but
sometimes I mean they say you know I can
you be like you know like a minority
partner I said I can put it and have
some equity and put some
kappa diversity an alleged driver right
and also like another thing you you are
like pc like having a full-time job you
know get a team basically yeah you know
like bill in even if it's like a
freelancer so you know like i mean just
just get a team because you want I mean
you will not be able to actually do
everything yourself yeah that's that's a
very I love that mindset to it's very
outside the box I can tell you think cuz
you're thinking I how you get your
co-workers to invest or how to build a
team of people that can help you and
that's you know that mindset it's more
of an advanced mindset but that I can
tell it's gonna this made you successful
it's gonna take you very far so I'd love
to hear what's what's next for you
what's your next goal I guess with your
business where you see yourself taking
it yeah right now I'm pretty much
working a few things connect backward
Vasily so now that I see I have a
predator is having successful sale so I
trying to really like solid some of the
issues I said I have like for example
like producing like you know defects
over a tuna basically by improving you
know my you know the my marketing
materials i user's manual and tried to
basically like going through process of
registering my own brand
so I start doing private label with my
product and you know like and then I
want to basically invest more on the
marketing services like try to get
influencers for my to grow a brand
Vasily eventually my my call is to after
a few years to be able to to happen to
be in a potion to sell the business if I
want to Vasily I want to build it you
know to sell it in the future
yeah I love it well somebody say thank
you so much for taking the time thanks
to you and I think a lot of people
watching this hopefully you're inspired
by this and Aldo Berto story and
everything so thank you guys so much for
