hey everyone this is stefan from
projectlifemastery.com and in this video
i'm going to talk to you about the
master versus the dabbler master
mentality versus dabbler mentality now
there's a really great book called
mastery by George Leonard and I highly
recommend it it's a pretty short book I
read it many years ago but I loved the
concept of mastery so much I believe
it's the path to success
it's the path to living an extraordinary
life now you look at the most successful
people in the world the happiest most
fulfilled they are masters I'm gonna
talk a little bit in this video but what
that means but I love it so much that I
built my online brand project life
mastery that's how much I believe in
mastery so what is the master and what
is the dabbler well a dabbler is
somebody that starts something but they
never finish it they start something new
whether that's a goal that they want to
achieve maybe it's a business maybe
invest in a course a product maybe it's
a relationship right a brand new
relationship or maybe it's learning how
to play a musical instrument or maybe
it's learning how to you know play a new
sports whatever it might be
the dabbler loves the newness and the
initial rush and excitement of starting
something new because any time that you
start something new there's a novelty to
that right you know starting a new
business or starting a new sport or
relationship you get this initial rush
and hi right it's exciting because you
get exposed to this new world and your
learning curve is like this it just you
know skyrockets right away because
everything is brand new and you're
learning all these new concepts and
strategies and techniques and you know
you just grow really fast but what
happens though is you hit that
inevitable plateau right you get to that
point with anything I don't care what it
is whether it's a relationship or a
business or a sports or a musical
instrument where you know you learn a
little bit of the basics or you got
started with it you got that ball
rolling a little bit but you hit that
plateau boom plateau that plateau
basically is when you don't experience
that same growth that you once initially
did right and this is similarly you know
if you want to build your
you want to lose weight initially you
can lose a lot of weight pretty fast but
then you hit that plateau where your
body slows down a little bit and it's a
little bit harder to release that body
fat same thing you want to build muscle
you do the same routine day after day
eventually hit a plateau you're you know
you your body is not putting on more
muscle so what happens with the dabbler
is that when you hit a plateau when
things get challenging frustrating they
get discouraged a little bit or maybe
you just they get distracted by
different things what happens with the
dabbler is they jump ship they move on
to something else because that initial
newness and excitement has now worn off
and they now move on to the next
opportunity you know they you know we're
once wanting to play the guitar right
and they did that for a little bit and
we bought the guitar and everything but
then they got bored of that now they
move on to you know playing the piano
right or you know learning tennis or
starting a business and then sure enough
they repeat the same cycle they start
that new thing it's exciting it's fun at
first the learning curve everything is
brand new and then after a few days a
few weeks a few months they hit that
plateau the newness the excitement wears
off and they move on to the next thing
and then they just repeat that cycle
again and again and again they easily
get distracted
they don't go deep with anything they
always stay at the surface surface and
sure enough they don't achieve success
they don't achieve any of their goals
they don't you know they they always
rationalize things of why you know it's
okay you know they set a goal that they
you know they're serious about at that
moment but then they change their mind
and they have some sort of story or
rationalization something comes up in
their life their dog dies you know
something happens in their career or
financial situation they get busier time
whatever it is they have some sort of
story rationalization and sure enough
they move on to something else and they
repeat that process again and again and
again they don't get anywhere okay if
there's one thing you can take from this
video is do not be a dabbler and
hopefully by after watching this video
you can self diagnose yourself and
see where you're at and look at your
patterns because if you can look at that
in an honest way be honest with yourself
then hopefully we can free you from that
now that's a dabbler and I see this time
and time again people that have this
mentality and sure enough they don't get
anywhere it's a very unfortunate thing
the master on the other hand is somebody
that when they start something they
commit to something it's done you know
that's how I am I commit to something it
is done you know I just have that
mentality I commit that you know that's
what I'm committed to I'm gonna find a
way if I can't find the way I make the
way that's the master mentality there's
no back door there's no plan B they burn
the boats so they have to take the
island you know they make it a must for
them and they understand that there's a
process ahead and even though they
understand you know at first it's gonna
be exciting it's gonna be new there's
gonna be a certain novelty to it when
they hit that plateau they keep going
they understand that plateau means that
it's just an opportunity for you to grow
and find a new answer right and they hit
that plateau maybe they look for a coach
a mentor a solution somebody has already
been there before and actually already
you know achieved that path further
along the path of mastery that it can
learn from and and learn how to get past
that plateau they don't give up they
don't just throw in the towel at the
first sign of adversity you know they're
in it for the long term and they
understand you know when you hit that
plateau it's time to go back to the
fundamentals you know you look at a
professional athlete a basketball player
you know they're so talented but sure
enough they get two points or they hit a
plateau their game is off they lose
momentum that you know they go on a
streak that they're you know you know
missing baskets or whatever it is and
sure enough what is the master do they
go back to the fundamentals and they
have a coach a mentor somebody that can
point that out to them and help them get
their mentality of their mindset back to
where it needs to be and the master is
someone who's always looking for that
little edge the littlest thing because
you
and when your first brand-new to
something your learning curve is like
this but what happens is eventually when
you achieve a level of mastery and you
become more advanced with something then
all of a sudden your growth becomes more
like this right here's the plateau and
their growth is like tiny it's like very
very incremental and you know almost
it's almost like the grass is growing
it's like it's so slow but the master
they're always looking for that you know
one in a 1% in a point zero zero one
percent your little growth that they can
experience I remember one thing with
Kobe Bryant you know the you know
amazing basketball player is you know he
wanted you know he was so obsessed about
you know improving his game he was a
master he had that mentality you know
the black mamba the killer instinct that
you know he had it was just totally
relentless but he was always looking for
a little you know a little adjustment
that he could make that would allow him
to grow and improve his game and I
remember one time he went to Nike who
you know sponsors him and does his whole
shoe company and stuff and he asked them
to make this little change which was
like literally like a millimeter in his
shoe right and it's like it's just so
bizarre to think that that little change
and you know how was that is really
gonna change his game or improve it but
he saw it as an opportunity to improve
like a little bit and he wanted that
improvement he wanted that edge right
and so he is so committed to master his
craft long term that's fair enough he is
you know one of the greatest basketball
players you know maybe top top 10
basketball players of all time so it's
that mentality that you need to have if
you want to achieve or be successful
with anything you know the master
doesn't get distracted right they commit
to something they don't get distracted
by all these other things they stay
focused on that path until it's
completed you know they started the race
they're gonna finish the race and
they're gonna find a way to do it
the I understand it's a process you know
whereas the dabbler on the other hand
they're so attached to a result or an
outcome that sure enough when they don't
achieve it to get frustrating they give
up the master loves the process they
love the practice of that and just to
hole
their craft and I remember a great quote
by Bruce Lee Bruce Lee says I do not
fear the man who has practiced 10,000
kicks once I do not fear that man I fear
the man who's practiced one kick 10,000
times because that one kick mastering
that as opposed to dabbling with all
these different techniques and
strategies and concepts and whatever it
might be that's a lot more powerful to
master and go deep with one thing in
their business whatever you know
whatever it might be you know I had one
guy came to me and sent an email and he
said Stefan out you know I want to
invest in your course K money mastery my
publishing course and I see this all the
time and he's like okay you have a 30
day money back guarantee and I want to
test it out for 30 days and after 30
days I don't get the result that I'm
after that I want which is making a lot
of money then I'm gonna ask for the
refund and you know that's that and I
said to the guys like listen don't buy
it don't invest you're not the right
person to invest in this course because
you've got to understand that this is a
process you know it's not like this is
not a get-rich-quick where you invest in
something and then after 30 days you
know you're rich right that's not how it
works you got to understand when you
start a business there's a process to
that you're gonna be investing money and
time into building an asset with no
immediate return right that that's what
is required with building a business
you're stuck in the employee mentality
the dabbler mentality which is you know
when you're an employee what happens is
you believe and how it works is that you
put in 40 hours a week you're guaranteed
a certain amount of money in exchange
for that time right you put in 40 hours
of value you're guaranteed you know
whatever that that income is that's now
how it works when you build a business
right you don't get paid based on your
time it doesn't matter how much time
you're spending in your business you
only get paid based on the results that
you create and so you know you could put
in all this time and not get any
immediate return right
it's almost like you know if you want to
grow a tree the dabbler the mentality is
like okay I plant a seed in the ground
which is what you always do when you
start anything new you plant the seed
and you come back after 30 days and
you're like what you know where's the
oak tree you know where you know where's
the result that I wanted and that's not
how it works if you plant a seed and
that's maybe growing a business that's
maybe starting a new skill new
relationship you got to be consistent
you got to water that that seed every
single day you get a nurture it you got
to take good care of it and what what's
happening without even noticing or
seeing it as there's a foundation being
built and as long as you're consistent
eventually what's going to happen is
that tree is gonna sprout and it's gonna
become something and then you have to
keep the dirt you know nourishing it and
watering in and eventually grows and
grows and grows and after you know
months or years it grows into this this
authoritative incredible strong tree
that produces amazing fruits which are
the results that you now get to enjoy
and that might be passive income that
might be whatever it might be but
there's a process to that doesn't happen
over 30 days you got to understand
there's a process and not have that
dabbler mentality because that guy that
mentality what's gonna happen is he's
gonna come he's gonna do some for 30
days he's not gonna get the result that
he wants he's gonna move on to another
thing another opportunity same process
doesn't get what he wants move on to
another thing same process doesn't get
what he wants and he's just dabbling
right he's just all over the place and
the guy never changes his life never
gets anywhere you know I almost hate you
know 30-day money-back guarantees and
all I sort of stop because it gives
people a back door gives them an exit
you know it gives them an excuse you
know whenever a little excuse comes up
they can easily just eject and move on
to something else for me I love it like
I want to commit to something I don't
want any backdoor I want to if I commit
to it I want to be committed long-term
to achieving the result the goal that
I'm after right I don't I want to burn
the boat so there's no possibility of
that's what the Trojans did that's what
you know the ancient Greeks you know
they want to take an island once they
get to the island they burn their boat
so there's no possibility of retreating
and it makes it a must for them it's
almost like if someone had a gun to your
head and said you have to find a way you
would find the way because every part of
yourself will be activated your
resourcefulness or a commitment
everything so the master mentality
that's where everything becomes
available you know understanding that
you commit to something you got to go
deep with it you got to commit a long
term you got to keep improving and
growing another analogy that I have for
you it's almost like building a bridge
let's say there's a gap okay this is
where you are right now today this is
where you want to be there's a gap okay
you want to close the gap the way you
close the gap if you build a bridge okay
here's where you are you've got to build
a bridge that could be investing in a
course of product it could be a new
business it could be a new relationship
it could be you know new activity
whatever it is you start to build the
bridge and what the dabbler does is they
start building the bridge and then what
happens is you know the newness wears
off to get bored and excuse something
happens in their life and they stop
building the bridge and then they move
on to start another bridge right so now
they're trying to build another bridge
and they start building it and then
Chernov again something happens they
dabble and then you know it doesn't get
built and they build another bridge and
they start building it and they never
get to the other side they never
actually build the whole bridge from
here to there to get to where they want
to be whereas the master on the other
hand they start building the bridge they
hit plateaus they hit adversity you know
things happen things come up in their
life they get busy financial problems
whatever it is challenges in a
relationship whatever they don't just
jump ship and start a new one they
commit to it long term they go deep
that's how you really grow they keep
going and they finally build the bridge
and then when they build the bridge they
don't move on to the next bridge so
easily they want to make sure that they
improve that bridge they make it
stronger
they're reinforce it in multiple ways of
that bridge can last for many years to
come
so which one are you are you the master
or the dabbler you know one way to find
out is just look at your life look at
your results now I could probably tell
what you know which one you are but not
in touch you have that awareness of
yourself and you get finally honest with
yourself and decide to make a change
that's how things will change for you so
I'd love for you to leave a comment
