What Do I Think About The New Kindle Unlimited?

hey guys Stefan here from
projectlifemastery.com and in this
Kindle Q&A video I'm gonna answer a
common question that I get which is what
do I think about the new Kindle
unlimited program that Amazon just
rolled out now I'm gonna show it to you
a little bit about what that is
you know how its evolved and changed and
what this can mean for you if you're a
Kindle publishing now Kindle unlimited
is a program that Amazon release where
customers pay every month about $10 a
month and they get unlimited access to
download Kindle books that are only
enrolled as part of KDP select so as a
Kindle publisher when you publish your
book you have an option of enrolling
your book in a kvp select program and
that basically means your Kindle book is
exclusive only to Amazon for 90 days and
then it automatically re-enrolled itself
so you can't publish that book or sell
it on any other platform but they give
you some perks and benefits they give
you like the free promotion you can
offer a five day free promotion for your
book
the Kindle countdown deals and they
allow you to obviously you know enroll
your book and Kindle unlimited where all
these people can get access to your book
now this does not matter or affect you
if you're selling your book at $2.99
4.99 etc you're still if people buy your
book and they're not a part of Kindle
unlimited you're still going to get your
70% royalty from that okay but this is
only for Kindle unlimited that I'm
referencing okay so it's only affecting
your Kindle unlimited downloads if your
book is enrolled inside KDP select now
though the way that Kindle unlimited was
originally set up which is that people
gonna have access to your book and they
can download it they're paying every
month for this service but you only get
paid as a publisher if the customer
opens your book and reads past ten
percent of the book and they had some
sort of formula of determing determining
how much to pay publishers you know it's
kind of like split amongst the spy and
it was around two dollars I believe that
would they would pay for each person
open and read past ten percent well
that's recently changed now and as of
July 1st they introduced what is called
ke NPC don't ask me to explain and break
that down but you can look it up but
basically the way it works now is that
you only get paid based on how
many pages of your book someone opens
and reads and so they're giving more
emphasis if your books longer because
the longer your book is and the more
pages of that book that a customer opens
and reads the more potential earnings
that you can have for that book as well
alright so how is this affect you as a
kindle publisher and what does this mean
first thing that I'll say I've been
involved to Kindle publishing since
2011-2012 I've seen a lot of changes and
I understand people worry about these
kind of changes but I really never do
because it's almost to be expected and
whenever Amazon and Kindle releases a
change like this you know it always kind
of takes a while to really determine
what this means so I think people worry
a little bit too much about these
changes that occur but really you've got
to give it a chance to roll out and kind
of let them test it and see how it goes
to really determine what it means for
you so that's one thing I'd say is don't
freak out and just always stay calm and
relaxed whenever these changes occur now
the other thing when I mention too is
Amazon's always changing and testing
things anyways I always see them testing
things on their website you know how
they originally launched Kindle limited
was a test you know they change it to
what it is now and they're probably
gonna change it again at some point as
well understand that Amazon wants to
incentivize and always needs to
incentivize their publishers and authors
they want to make sure that you're happy
you know if this is not successful and a
lot of publishers complain they're not
making enough money etc then Amazon's
gonna change it they're always gonna
evolve and adapt it so that their
publishers can make money because you
know they understand that Kindle
publishing it only works because of
people like you and I who are publishing
books to Kindle and selling on Amazon
that that's the potential for them to
make money so they always want to
incentivize you and so they're always
gonna find a way to make it profitable
for authors and publishers to succeed at
this so that's another reason why I
never really worry about changes like
this that occur okay now what has
changed and how can you take advantage
of this Amazon is putting more of an
emphasis on quality books and this is
how I've changed my strategy over the
years as well this is what I teach and
Kay
mastery quality is extremely important
okay and also the length of the book is
now become increasing important as well
but from my opinion that still doesn't
mean and should go out there and invest
thousands and dollars on a kindle book
in my opinion that's not an intelligent
way of doing it because that's too risky
you don't know whether or not your
Kindle books gonna sell if it's gonna be
profitable so that's why I'm not a fan
of that approach I personally always
invest around a hundred dollars no more
than a hundred dollars to get my book
out there it's a quality book
well-written covers a specific solution
to a problem or it might be a fiction
book but it's not super long you know
it's a shorter read around thirty pages
or so and I sell it inexpensively for
$0.99 or $2.99 but I'm also putting it
out there to make sure that my book is
selling ok the more important thing
before you even worry about Kindle
unlimited is making sure you're sure
your book is selling if your books not
ranked well it doesn't have Amazon
reviews and it's not selling then Kindle
unlimited doesn't affect you at all
that's the first step the first step is
to get your book selling and to mitigate
your risk as much as possible you know
and once your book is selling and you've
proven that hey you know I've got a
great selling book and that once you're
in that position now you want to think
about how you can increase the
profitability of that book and allow to
make you more money in which case
whenever I have a book that sells for me
that always provides validation because
that means for me like wow I've found a
great market I found a great niche I've
got a book that's really doing well now
I want to improve the book and that's
the mentality that I recommend you have
to have the mentality of constant
never-ending improvement you know if you
have a book that's selling that's an
asset that's a passive income stream you
should be very excited about that and
you should want to protect that and
maximize the potential revenue that you
can make from that book and so that's
why at that point you'd want to make the
book longer add more content to it and
prove it you know make it into a book
that it can make you as much money as
possible turn it into a paperback book
turn it into an audio book do everything
you can to maximize again the revenue
that you can earn from that book and so
the great thing about that model by the
way is that if you have a book that
doesn't sell
it's not that big of a risk it's not
that big of a loss because it's not like
you invested thousands of dollars in
that book and lost that much you know
you only invested less than a hundred
dollars and it's better to learn early
so that you're not you know caught in
too deep and it's harder to get out of
that hole that you dug yourself into so
I like to test out the markets first now
again Kindle unlimited the way it works
now is that the longer your book is and
the more pages that they read the more
money you're going to make from that so
what that would mean for you again is
just making your book longer but only
doing that once your book is selling and
profitable okay now another strategy and
tip I teach this inside full disclosure
of K money mastery is you want to
incentivize your customers to open your
book and read as many pages as possible
ideally to go to the very end of your
book and one of the ways that you can
incentivize them is providing a bonus
for them okay you could use this in your
marketing your book description your
book title all that so if I have a
certain book on I don't know let's say
meditation one of the bonuses that I can
offer is that can offer like a free
meditation mp3 that they can get for
free if they buy my book just as an
added value one that's gonna increase
your sales because more people you're
giving them more more value for buying
your book cause you're not just giving
them a book you're also giving them as
great free mp3 they can help them so
you're giving them that as well or if
you can give them the audio version of
your book too okay you can have like an
mp3 audio version as well give that to
them as well
so more people gonna buy your book more
people are gonna obviously open it and
you want to have it so that they can get
access to the bonus at the end of the
book so now you're kind of using what is
called an ethical bribe and you see this
all the time you see this you know it
with internet marketers you know you see
like a squeeze page or an opt-in page
and it's a page that basically says you
know hey get this free report get this
free video get this free you know
download or whatever and all you have to
do is enter your email address and
basically it's a way to bribe you
ethically to enter your email address
and they're gonna give you something in
exchange with that of a high perceived
value and they're getting your email
address so they
build a relationship with you and and
you can learn more about the products
and services so it's really the same
kind of method and strategy I do this in
my business if you click below this
video they'll know and you'll probably
see a project like mater calm slash
subscribe it's an often page that I have
where I'm like hey I've got this great
video for you some great information
that will help you take your life to the
next level just enter your email address
and I'll send it to you it's like the
Zack same thing so when you offer a
bonus and you incentivize them with an
ethical bribe that you're gonna give
them if they open and read past you know
all the way to the end of your book
you're getting paid for all those pages
you're giving them a bonus you're
getting them on redeem you list as well
and you're maximizing the amount of
money you're gonna make a lot of
consumers and customers won't even
necessarily care about the book they'll
just want the bonus you know this
happens all the time in marketing to a
lot of the times like you go to a sales
letter a long-form sales letter and
studies show people look at the headline
and they scroll all the way down to the
end to look at the price and then they
go back up to determine whether or not
they want to read it or not it's kind of
the same thing with Kindle books two
people will skip all the content just to
get to the end that bonus that you're
offering them because the bonus has
almost a higher perceived value than the
actual book that you're selling for
$2.99
so I mean that's a great strategy you
know one of many strategies that I teach
side K money mastery but I think you
know what when I think about this more
and more I think one thing you have to
understand is that the Internet is
always changing and evolving it's always
you know you always have to adapt to it
and it kind of reminds me of a great
quote by Charles Darwin which was that
it's not the strongest or the most
intelligent who survived it's Hugh who
is the most adaptable and you have to be
adaptable in business because there's
always gonna be changes it's never gonna
end
the Internet's evolving rapidly I read
somewhere that in the next 10 years over
1 billion people are gonna have access
to the internet that never had access
before so if you think about how much
the internet is changing when the
internet changes as Amazon and Kindle
grows they have to make changes and
adapt and us as publishers as marketers
as entrepreneurs we have to adapt along
with those
I think the great thing that happens
when these changes occur is it really
separates the dabblers from the people
they're actually committed because the
dabblers are the ones that anytime you
face adversity or a challenge they are
always the first ones to quit and give
up and so therefore they never really
succeed and get ahead whereas the people
that are the masters they're always
adapting they anticipate that plateaus
and they're doing things the right way
from the start so they're not even that
worried about it at all you know so I
think you have to always be willing to
adapt and you know you can't fall into
the trap of being the dabble or the
quitter when the going gets tough
because every change that occurs is
always a new opportunity and if things
ever get harder that's always a good
thing too because you know it has a
higher barrier of entry as well because
the dabblers aren't ones that are
willing to put in the time the effort to
energy the work to succeed at that
they're only going to be looking for
shortcuts and you know the short term
profit strategies so if you do think
it's the right way and you produce
quality books you're marketing your book
the right way you're aggressive you
promote it you're doing all the right
things and you never really have to
really about any of these changes occur
with Amazon that in many ways it can be
advantageous to you and you end up
making more money when these changes
roll out so you always have to think
long term with that being in mind and
always being willing to adapt
that's why I've adapted I've gone to you
know create space audible as well
because I see the trends I see the
opportunities and you know I'm always
one step ahead if you're always one step
ahead you're gonna be successful in
anything that you do you can't be just
doing the bare minimum you can't just be
a dabbler in this or anything that you
do you've got to be the master you got
to be one step ahead and you've got to
be doing more than everyone else if you
really want to have the most success so
hopefully this answers the question
around the Kindle unlimited and what my
thoughts are with it
ultimately you know you can use it as a
great opportunity if you choose to and
it could be a big advantage to you
moving forward so thank you so much for
